some people are cool with living and dying in a little house built in the 70s and "enjoying" a 10 year "fixed income" retirement

others... not so much. and that is fine.

I don't hate my job/career at all, but I'm 25 years in, and I think pretty much any job gets old after enough time. It would for me at least.

This is where I am. I am fully VESTED another ten or twelve years and I am hanging it up. I get almost half the year off and get to choose when I take vacation and have a pension(most companies do not have this anymore. I see the younger managers grinding and moving up and good for them I was there. I love where I live and actually don't mind going to work so I guess I have a pretty good situation. Pension, Nice 401k set up, alot of equity in my house and hopefully my fat social security I paid into will pay out at least half when I call it quits.

This X 1000. It's work ethic, something that is sorely lacking these days. It's a good thing that the inventors in the early days of our country had it or we would still be riding horses and living in homes without A/C.

You realize one can have work ethic while also not wanting to be a corporate slave?

There's a difference between working hard and being a corporate arse sucker.

Corporate arse suckers largely have a celling. I know a few executives in various companies who are good normal family people who got where they are via talent/ work ethic / good connections.

Corporate arse suckers never accomplish a whole hell of a lot, and you can only bullshite your way so far up the ladder. Sure, some of the trash makes it through, but it's certainly possible to be both a good family man and a c-suite of a very large company.

By the start of your 4th year at a company, your potential there is mostly defined whether you agree or not.

If you're promotable, that promotion will find you.

If you're not, you'll still be doing the same job you came in with.

If someone hasn't talked to you about advancement by the middle of your 4th year, it's time to cut out. They don't like you.

been with my employer for 41 years, sometimes you have to defer gratification and look a few steps ahead instead of banging your spoon on your high chair and screaming I want it now or I quit

What is a corporate slave? If you feel like a slave then leave the plantation and start your business.

Not the reality of today's job market. Sorry, is what it is. Loyalty is rarely ever rewarded in corporate.

What makes these people tick?

They are shallow, narcissistic, and have huge fragile egos that they can only feed by constantly swinging their little chub dicks around while pretending they are an 8" schlong.

I know 2 years is the typical time to get antsy for most ladder climbers, but jumping ship after 4 years as a younger employee could be pretty dumb.

99% agree with you... worked at a place that had that showy workaholic culture.... LOOK AT ME BOSS ITS LATE AND IM STILL WORKING!! shite was nauseating and I never did fit in.

I'm way happier that I'm now at a place where I can say hey...imma dissappear for a a few days to week cause it's been awhile since me and my family disappeared.. my reports are competent adults and all will be fine, and not get any push back

That said...there is part of me that enjoys a quiet hotel room for a bulkshit site visit once every couple months
