The reason is because you are reducing the usable roadway. Now you have the traffic jam one mile of one lane instead of 1/2 mile of two lanes. Watch the video on the top of page 5 so we have one less a-hole fricking it up.

Zipper merge videos should be shown before every show/game on tv. I get that folks get pissy because they think they are being morally correct and that someone is cheating by going to the front or something, but they are just factually incorrect, making traffic worse, and most are probably just ignorant of it
eta: that is separate from merging on an on ramp, however, where you are supposed to match the speed of traffic.

Problem is, people are too selfish/stupid for zipper merges to ever work. Traffic engineers need to understand this, yet they don't, hence the new airport flyover. So in the future I-10 will be slowed down from the people leaving the airport and the people getting on I-10 from williams blvd.
I mean, we have arses that get into the merge lane and take it to the very end forcing themselves in front of everyone.

These are likely to pass/merge, then brake to 10mph under the speed limit. Or they fluctuate between 45 and 73 in a 75 (not kidding) because they're on their phones. I don't want to be behind you, because you create risk to my life.

To everyone who is going on and on about the “zipper merge” and how effective and efficient it is…the reality of the matter is that Louisiana drivers are totally incapable of doing that. It’s literally impossible.

Turns out severe snow rated all terrains just plow through water pockets. And longtravel suspension with super soft top springs are great at keeping the rubber on the road.
Edit: it's a pity no one offers a 285/75r18 with a decent speed rating. The new reflash is quite quick.

I feel you.
When psychopaths drive near me like they have a deathwish, I think to myself - I wish that car would drive off the road and crash into the woods in a giant ball of flames so I can drive right past and laugh.
That’s what I always thought, until I actually saw that happen and the car burst in flames and no way the occupants survived.
It was sobering and I felt semi-guilty for those thoughts.
Now I just try and see out of control drivers before they are in my sphere so I can engage evasive maneuvers immediately.
Karma will take care of the rest.

Happened couple months ago. A major company truck driver where I live did this to me at a merge. Basically ran me off the road. He was in the area that forced him to merge into my lane and he comes speeding up from the back as all of us were lined up already merging. I called the sprinkler company and asked them if they wanted to bid on a job I had. Then I said never mind bc of what your representative just did to me. She was pissed he did this. I truly had a building sprinkler job to get done so it was fun. Used the competitor.

You're probably right, most people are incapable of using common sense. However if they act like an arse they show it's not being incapable, it's they're just an arse!!!

Just allow the person in and don’t be an a-hole because of ego. The guy that does it right and accelerates properly to merge in gets blocked by the guy who speeds up to close that gap. Then the guy trying to merge brakes slightly and accelerates again to slip in behind you and the next guy closes the gap. Now he is getting closer to the end because 2 assholes just couldn’t cede a spot and then the 3rd a-hole approaches and says “look at this idiot waiting until the end to merge “ and closes the gap to punish the guy because he has no clue that the 2-3 assholes in front of him were the reason the person he is mad at is pushed to the end of the ramp.
I know there are dumbasses who can and will frick up a merge but my 38 years of driving state and federal highways points to road raging assholes as being the culprit far more than clueless drivers.

Depends upon the location and situation. I will give a example. In my hometown of Ponchatoula on Hwy 22 eastbound there is spot that goes from 4 lanes down to 2. Well there is stop light at 5th street and the 4 lane turns into 2 lanes at 3rd street, I will add at 4th street the right side lane is designated as a turn left only with no option for you to merge into the left lane. But it happens everyday someone will race around the cars following the law and want to bypass and jump in front and force their way in. No, frick that you have to follow the law like everyone else. I am under no obligation to let you cut in because you think your time is more important than everyone else's.
