The absolute worst is people who throw cigs in urinal. It makes them soggy and damn near impossible to light.

I guess you've never seen the episode of Mythbusters where they couldn't get a puddle of gasoline to light by throwing a lot cigarette into it?

Static discharge is a greater hazard than smoking at the pump.
As a teen I worked at a service station with a guy that would throw his butts into a 5 gallon bucket of gas.
I wouldn't do it and I wasn't crazy about him doing it but I probably witnessed it hundreds of times. Pretty sure his entire reason for doing it was because he knew it made folks uncomfortable.

Exactly. Lit cigarettes can cause fires. Fires near gasoline can cause bigger fires.
That’s the stupidest myth that has ever been busted. Smoking at a gas station is an incredibly stupid idea

Despite all the talk of the MythBusters experiment about throwing a lit cigarette into a puddle of gasoline, that’s not actually the risk when someone is smoking at a gas pump.
Yes, a puddle of gasoline will extinguish the cigarette before igniting. But if you really want to test a more relevant concept, try filling a beaker with gasoline, suspending a cigarette directly above the beaker, and taking a drag.
Cigarettes burn hot enough that if you take a drag in a hazardous atmosphere (meaning concentration of gasoline vapors between the upper and lower explosive limits) there’s a good chance the gasoline will ignite. In reality, it’s not especially likely for an explosive atmosphere to form anywhere more than a few inches away from the nozzle - especially with the modern vapor recovery nozzles. But it’s still not a very good idea.

I worked as a youth volunteer for the local fire dept and I thought it was funny that the firemen would smoke while gassing up the trucks.
