What’s up with people that exit mass immediately after receiving communion? Most participate in the remaining 5-10 minutes giving thanks and praise while some bolt to beat traffic? Get an early start to their next venture? I don’t get it.

What do you think about these people, OT?

They’ve got their forgiveness and whatnot so business there is done . Staying till then end is just formalities I would think.

It definitely shows priorities. The one time a week most of those people do anything that concerns their faith and they can't even stay the whole service. "Got to get that 15 minute jump on the lunch crowd." Healing Place has this problem too. When the alter call happens, 2/3rds of the church bolts and most of them showed up late to begin with.

I knew Catholic kids in hs that really believed that going to Saturday mass would wipe the slate clean for all of the past week's transgressions so they were able to go back out and rinse and repeat starting that night

I think that their decision to leave is between them and God. I think the fact that you are more focused on judging them for leaving than you are of paying attention to what YOU are doing is a violation of the saying "Judge not lest ye be judged."

Don't worry about what others do. You have no control over that. Worry about your own affairs.

The celebration of the Eucharist is the whole point of Mass, so once communion is done they feel the obligation is done.

I probably would leave after communion but I fear being judged by others.

More power to those who don't care.

Technically, they were right. Participation in the Eucharist includes the forgiveness of venial sins.

But the more problematic issue here is the perception that one's sins are akin to entries in a ledger book that can be deleted, added, and re-deleted without deeper reflection and contrition.

that's what I was getting at, one thing to ask forgiveness for sinful behavior with the sincere intention of not repeating, these kids were going to mass because they were clearing out the ledger with the full intention of going out and be the biggest, drunk, whore, druggie, et al...

I stay 5 minutes after the priest exits. But I arrive just before Communion.
