Calico! All calico cats are female. I had one and she was so awesome.
All the cats I've owned were inside/outside cats. They'd prowl around outside during the day and come in at night.
Cats are also very territorial. They don't run away so I'm guessing yours was neglected and went out in search of food, found a better home and decided to stay.
I like dogs too, but not those stupid weak lap dogs. Big dogs. I'd love to get a dog and have wanted a Catahoula for the longest time, but dogs require a lot of attention, need to be walked daily, and spent time with. If you can't give a dog the attention it needs, don't get one. That's why I don't have one.

I also hate when people take a 12 year old dog to the pound because they don't want to take care of them anymore. Those poor animals.
I feel bad when the owner passes or goes into a nursing home & family refuses to care for the animal.
My goal for retirement is to have a rescue specific for this type of situation

We've been in this situation three times. Adopted dogs that were 12 years or even older because we couldn't stand for them to die alone. A 11 year old mutt 12 year old yellow lab, and a 13 year old Yorkie. We gave them all a good last year or 3 of their life and a place to call home.
We had to back off doing that now that our kids are older and get so upset. Rough on them to get attached and lose an animal after a year or so. Hell it was rough on me. The yellow lab we adopted we named Gumbo and he was my big couch buddy. Big lazy dude and I cried like a baby when we had to put him down after a little over a year (cancer).

Good man.
I told my wife if she dies on me, I'm buying land, building housing and rescuing all the animals no one wants, old, special need, etc, and spending the rest of my life loving and caring for them.

Heard this story way too many times.
Hence why we foster and adopt out nearly 100 pets a year

Not a bad plan my friend

Why wait?
We do it now. It's a labor of love, but I know none of these pets we have as our own and the ones we can get adopted out would stand a chance elsewhere.

If I didn't have kids there wouldn't be a dog or cat left at the humane society. I get bit it's all good, if one of my kids gets bit I'm probably killing an animal. Just being honest.

I do the same thing. But I'll happily give them to someone who would take em.
Cats are weird. Especially outside cats.

I don't know man. We live in a similar setup and have two cats that roam around. Most nights they are around the house but it's not uncommon for them to stay gone a couple days. They're just cats out doing cat things. If someone called me about our cats I would likely tell them to just leave them be and they would return home.

If you've never had a calico, you're in for a treat! I've loved all the kitties I've had, but my two calicos were just the sweetest. I still miss those two. When I lost my last older kitty in March, I adopted a 4 year old calico who was being fostered. She hid a lot at first. I didn't realize she'd been in the foster home for over a year, so it took her some time to feel safe and at home, but now, she's just wonderful. I've been thinking about finding another calico to keep her company when no one is at home.

She has been super sweet so far, she is definitely a little scared and we have 2 other cats and 2 dogs.
It works out good that our other animals don't have an aggressive bone in their body. The dogs are just like oh hey another cat thing. The cats are of course curious.
She's the most vocal cat I've owned though which makes it pretty funny. She will hiss at one of the other cats and they don't know what to do. She is yet to show any real aggression, I'm sure she's still just scared.

Cats are pretty awesome as long as you stay on top of the litter situation.
The most common line by cat owners is "my cat thinks she is a dog" or some iteration of that

I don't really like cats, but I dislike them less than little fluffy dogs that bark all the time.
OP, good on you man.

You know animals well since you've had so many. It definitely can take some time, particularly if they've lived somewhere else. The fact that she wants to be there is a huge beginning. Hopefully, she and the other kitties will learn to love each other.
Mine will still hide from time to time. I had someone here working today, so she's hiding somewhere and will not answer. She's never tried to get out of the house and no doors were left open that I'm aware of, but I've been all over the place calling her with zero reply. I'm a little nervous about it, but she does not always answer when a stranger to her has been here.
ETA: She just ventured out of wherever it is she hides. My other cats always came when I shook the treat bag, but this one hasn't learned that she should always do that!
