I can see your point when merely saying the name of a country. But do you expect us to pronounce "hors d'oeuvres" as "horse doovers" because you think pronouncing it correctly is pretentious?

I say Mee ami instead on Miami because I heard Will Smith say it that way in a song.
I say Aye iti instead of Hay tee because Cyril Neville and the Uptown All Stars pronounced it they way in a song.
I say By Yo (for Bayou) instead of By You or By ya because Art Neville pronounced it that way in the song Fire on The Bayou.
I just trust these guys and copy their pronunciation to seem like I am in the know on this stuff.
