You working the ER tonight? Hang in there. I have a lot of respect for ER doctors. They saved my arse a few times.

Oh, were I live at, the small hospital ER doctors have been great. Thanks to computers, they have all my records on hand and know what to do when my CRT-D fires off. They don't have to play 50 million questions.

I've been to the ER once in the past 20 years. Was for head trauma, got a cat scan, laid in a bed for a couple of hours, then they finally let me go home even though I said I was fine hours before that.

I try to avoid any hospital. Accidents happen, but too many people act like they are dying because their lil tummy hurts or their throat is sore.

They really want an excuse to not go to work the next day.

Plus they don't have to pay and are required by law to be seen. Doesn't work that way at Dr.'s office during normal business hours.

Go ahead and order up that completely unnecessary CT for them.

Patients are woefully ignorant, but doctors are soooo damn arrogant and complain about patients incessantly.

I like to complain about ED docs who consult me at the most inconvenient times incessantly, so it all goes full circle.

A couple of months ago my dad had an accident during the night that required stitches. He waited until morning so as not to inconvenience the ER staff. You're welcome.

A couple of years ago I was coming home around midnight, slipped on ice, rolled my left ankle, then fell on top of it.

I hoped it wasn't broken and waited until the morning to go to the doctor (not hospital or ER) to have it checked. Woke up, drove myself to the nearest doctor (hospital was farther away) using my bad ankle to operate the clutch.

The nurses were flat out rude because I didn't have an appointment and they forgot about me in the room after taking x-rays. After more than an hour the doctor comes bursting in the room in a panic because he didn't realize nobody had attended to me and my ankle was badly broken. At this point it had been around 8 hours since I had broken it (and used it to operate a clutch) so I was in quite a lot of pain.

Long story short, I go to the ER now when shite like this happens.

On the opposite end of the spectrum I had to be rushed to an ER in West Africa for some serious food poisoning.

That ER experience was not a pleasant one. Sick and dehydrated hooked up to an IV with a leaky roof dripping water rain water on me.

I was actually the overnight shift or the 2p-2a shift for the last week and my sleep schedule is fricked.

I worked overnight last night. Was off tonight.

My wife works in healthcare. A couple months ago a lady came in by ambulance at 10 PM because her 3 year old son had a fever of 100.3. The ER Dr told her to give the kid some Tylenol and follow up with his pediatrician if the fever doesn't break. She then asked the Dr. if the Ambulance was going to bring them home.

I kind of hope one day I'm in the exam room waiting on the Doctor to come see me and they walk in and say "scruffy is...er uh.... I'm pleased to see you Mr Armytiger."

I'm not saying it's exactly the most intelligent decisions that are made, but if you don't have children, don't judge everything.

When you're informed that the neighbor's kid just got out of the hospital for pneumonia, and your 4 month old (first child) gets his first cold, you don't know what's normal and what's "really sick". My son had a "hard" time breathing (at least compared to anything we had experienced at the time) and we had just moved that week and didn't have a pediatrician set up yet, so no nurse hotline to call. Brought him to an urgent care/er type facility since it was all that was open. Not an actual ER, but still in hindsight an overreaction. They tested for RSV, but he was fine. As someone with no medical degree, their first experience with a newborn being sick, it's tough on a parent to know sometimes. You love that kid more than anything, so you don't care if you inconvenience the ER. The littlest things make you worry. Still after a year and a half, if he is too still in the video monitor, we can't sleep until we see him squirm a little .

Just as you aren't an expert in other fields, we aren't all experts in yours. Now, I'm not saying a lot of shite isn't really dumb. But sometimes, cut a parent a break. You think they enjoy being up at 3 am with their kids at the ER. They aren't even getting paid for it. shite, I think my son's trip was a $1200 mistake! You live and you learn.

many people use the ER as their primary care, when asked about Obamacare...never heard of it

This is a huge issue, especially in peds.

I refer people out to our clinics all the time for continuity of care, but they never go. They keep returning to the ER for what should be a clinic visit.

I hold no issues with first time parents.

I've had some in the ER for periodic breathing, normal breathing in a newborn, and I completely understand. Babies can be frightening at times if you don't know "normal".

Those aren't the ones I have an issue with.

I knew this white trash family that went to the ER for everything. They took their kids in for anything under the sun.

The dumbest thing I remember them going to the ER for was pink eye. It was one of the parents that had it.

Thanks assholes for our glorious insurance premiums because you needed to get your pink eye taken care of in the ER.

Who's insurance makes it so that the ER is a cheaper option. Or is it just that the ER will see you with no insurance? My insurance is way more expensive if it's an ER visit over a primary care doctor.
