Hospitals should be able to turn around people who obviously don't need emergency attention.

Problem is that it's not always obvious. And all it takes is one lawsuit to bankrupt a hospital and a doctor. We can be right 999,999 out of 1,000,000 and all it takes is one to ruin you or at least your reputation. I think we should get points for making good calls and diagnosis to use as credit against liability. It wears you down worrying about it.

My residency is 5 years and fellowship is essentially mandatory to get a job nowadays. Also, my salary won't quadruple.

I'm trying to think of 5 year programs that don't have starting salaries of $200+...still thinking...

If people had to pay a small percentage for all ER visits, the non-emergent crap would be cut down.

This. EMTALA has really screwed things up.

That is another good one in the Peds ER.

What's your favorite out of non-daily BM that aren't painful or bloody and newborn breath holding spells?

At least the breath holding spells are scary if you don't know what they are.

Some ER's get around that by having a mid level see patients in triage. If they deem it "non-emergent" they can still be seen but have to pay a fee of a few hundred bucks. Sends most of the free-loading idiots out the door.

Problem is Louisiana DOHH is a bunch of pussies and won't allow it.
