The 2016 Defense Authorization Act signed into law in before Thanksgiving ended the program, leaving only a four-year window for current participants to finish their degree programs.

Students who received REAP money in the past but were not in classes last semester will see their benefits cut off. VA officials said most of those individuals will be able to use Post-9/11 GI Bill funds instead, but are reaching out to affected students to gauge the potential impact of the changes.

GOOD. Instead of playing Halloween or dress up one weekend a month actually make the commitment and EARN the perks.

Yet another step in the dismantling of the finest fighting force in the history of the world.

They eventually get the GI bill, but I agree with this. Some perks should be kept for the active members... Want those? Go active

My news feed on Facebook should get interesting. I have a couple friends in the reserves who are very vocal about being in the reserves(to pay for their college). They refer to people as "civilians". Good guys but they let it get to their head.

It's not like us Guardsmen and Reservists don't have our own benefits we can use. I know LA and like two other states have the STEP program, and you can still do TA.
I agree, a lot of those programs should be kept for those that are active. I as a Guardsman can use the time given to me to get my degree with help from any number of programs. The problem for a lot of people is they want to finish it ASAP and want the money NOW. Tough shite.

Use STEP (State Tuition Exemption Program) here in LA. Covers tuition for up to 5 years or 150? hours. Must be a public university and there's no added service obligation. You may still be eligible I'm not sure how it works with any prior enlistment.

The problem ole war Skype, is that those reservist have a legal binding contract saying they are entitled to the benefit, plus a lot of theses reservist have deployed multiple times

Post 9/11 for them then.

I support the military 110% but this is a good move. I've know to many reserves who think that they deserve the respect of full timers.

It was a pretty good recruiting incentive for the reserves. The Corps relies pretty heavily on their reserve component more so than the other branches. I wonder how this will effect recruitment.

I agree but the thing is there are some reservists and guardsmen who have jobs that are much more dangerous than a lot of active duty people.
Hell, a lot of guardsmen are full time as well.

The article says that the program that's being phased out is redundant.
There are a lot of KIA "Reservists" who died in combat whose ghosts would object to the bashing of "Reservists" on this message board.

Am I mistaken or haven't quite a few reservists been deployed and killed in the past 15 years?

A lot of oil field, LEO, and firemen in my unit.

Any one who bashes the Guard/Reserves, especially after the past 15 years, is not an honorable man. Bottom line.
