Sure...
My father was a football coach for 20+ years. He sent dozens of kids to D1 schools. None of them played football before 7th grade.
The short, slow kids with poor hand eye coordination did though.
Football is not a sport where you must train technique from an early age like baseball, soccer, basketball or golf. If you've got speed, reflexes and strength, you'll be just fine.
Peewee football is for the parents.

A lot of the tough guys in here saying there isnt a difference in danger between football and other sports are the same ones suffering from permanent brain damage because of their earlier playing days. Nothing prepares a kid to not be a sissy like repetitive blows to the head

My son plays flag football at Healing Place and loves it. He started playing when he was 5 or 6. They should be having registration soon for this summer.

my 5-6 year old does not play football . I saw how they were being coached a made a decision not to play them early. he could probably take on some 7-8 year olds has he is tough having an older brother

I hear what you're saying but a kid who doesn't play tackle until 7th grade will definitely be playing some catch up for a bit. I don't think it's any less skillful than baseball or basketball. And GTFO with the golf bs. That's a whole separate discussion.

We started playing backyard tackle football long before my parents put us into any kind of formal league. We'd have been better off playing with pads at 5 or 6.
Point being, kids are going to be kids wether it's on the playground with no protection, or on a field with pads on. Why not the latter?
I believe 100% in teaching tackling technique to kids early so they're not leading with their heads when deciding to try out for the jr. High team at 12 years old.

I let my 5 year old play last year and he was 40 lbs. They don't hit that hard at that age for the most part but there are a few on each team that are head and shoulders above the rest. Buy him a nice quality helmet and lgood padded chin strap and let him go. If he likes football he'll have a blast. My wife was scared to death but she ended up having a blast watching the kids and going to practice and understanding that at that age it's not too physical. Mine is already asking when football starts again.

Most of the kids are average at best.
Well, that's pretty much how average works.

only a few on each team that are elite.

I am with you, there re a lot of other sports are great for kids, but it is time for football to go away. Also, every time I see one of these threads it reminds me that in 8 years of reading OT lounge I have never seen a thread started that asked what can I doe for my 5-6 year old now so that he will have the best chance at excelling at math and science later in school.

That's a pretty a presumptuous and ignorant stance. There's plenty of threads discussed about children's schoolings regarding homework, preparation, ACT help, tutoring options, school opinions and variances, etc.

thoughts on kids getting hurt at the 5/6 age?
is it competitive much or mostly still about fun at that age?
Parents get overly stupid at 5/6 age?
