Call if what you want but I will never let my son play football. There are too many other fun, energy-expelling sports out there that don't consist of running full speed into other kids
I understand your decision, but for the parents who allow their kids to play. I think 5 & 6 year olds is still way too young to go full contact. I think the NFL even suggest that kids don't start playing full contact football until they are 12.
They should start off playing flag football IMO. That way they can at least understand the game better when they get into middle school.

are the dangers in football really anything more than the dangers in baseball. Kids get beamed in the face all the time in baseball, much rather my kid taking his chances with full protective head gear and shoulder pads etc.
Yes, actually it is. Kids playing football are 50% more likely to sustain an injury that requires an emergency room visit than those playing baseball. The facts are there man just go find them lol

why? It's not like they're going to get hurt.
They dont hit hard enough to hurt each other.
You have a better chance of getting hurt at the age of 15-16 than you do at the age of 5-6

Agree. That's a lot better than throwing kids on a field at 5 and 6 years of age and just letting them run into each not knowing what they really should be doing (the way we played when I were a kid)

Actually, most sports injuries tend to happen between the ages of 5-14 with the least injuries occurring to 15-17 year olds

Bicycling. More than 200,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries.
Football. Almost 215,000 children ages 5 to 14 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for football-related injuries.

My point exactly

My son played 7-10 then decided not to play at 11. I wasn't going to force him to stop but I am glad he did tbh.

more kids are dying in baseball though.
And riding your bike is just as dangerous as football. good luck with that.

damn bro...kids bodies are so much different between a 5 year old and a 14 year old
I've seen more 11-14 year old kids with all types of injuries than I've seen in the 5-10 year old range.
When they turn 11-12 their bodies are way more susceptible to injury then they are at 5-10

i don't think he's too young i just can't really remember much about pee wee leagues. I really don't want him to get to 7/8's and be more hesitant because he's inexperienced with the tackling and aggression part of the game and be behind the 8 ball when kids are actually starting to fly around and make hits.

MSB, but I will go along. Played football from the age of 5 to 18 and I would not change that for anything. My dad gave me the choice to quit anytime I wanted, so I never felt like I was obligated to keep playing. I'm sure he would have been mad though
TLDR: Played all my life and loved it. Don't force it on your kid, let him fall in love with the game.

quote:I live in Mandeville and there's a 5/6 yr old program but they only practice once/week and then have quick game on Saturdays. Its basically an intro to football. I would say most of the kids playing at 7 didn't do the 5/6 program. As far as aggression, I find a kid either has it or doesn't. It helps to get hit a few times and realize it wont hurt and some kids do lose their fear. But generally, a timid kid will stay timid even after playing several years.

Start in a competitive flag league

how physical is pee wee football? how much do they get after it or is it just a bunch of little kids hug humping each other to the ground?
At five and six it's not too physical. They can't run very fast with pads on. It's a bunch of kids running around and tackling each other.

quote:Not similar in any way. Flag is all pass catching and pass coverage. If a 7 year old pee wee team completes 1 pass all year long it's an accomplishment. I'm not knocking flag, but it has no bearing on the tackle game at all.
