Flag is all pass catching and pass coverage. If a 7 year old pee wee team completes 1 pass all year long it's an accomplishment. I'm not knocking flag, but it has no bearing on the tackle game at all.

i agree. that does nothing for a kid stepping on the field with pads and there's some 18 month older physical freak who wants to take your head off now.

Yes, Pelican. Coquille in Madisonville has a 5/6 program too (I think) but not positive. Pelican for sure does.

Coquille isn't convenient for me at all. Pelican would be a bit more convenient, my kids at least go to school in mandeville. we're at the abita park so far for all their t ball and softball thus far.

I coached as well so it's a good time. The 5/6 deal is pretty lax and would be a good intro.

Assistant is the spot man... you get to teach and work with your kid (and others) but don't have to deal with the parents telling you little Jimmy should be the QB!!

The 5/6 program just started a couple years ago and it was designed to teach proper/safe technique. Hopefully that's the emphasis but I'm sure you have your share of douche bag dads worried about winning the game rather than showing the kids whats up.

also, you've seen the new batting cages that are token operated yet at pelican? I've seen about them on their website, might have to go check them out with the kids soon. i hope abita gets the same.

Yes they're nice.

ps - although at one time they talked about removing them because they're a loser for the park (maintenance, etc).

why? It's not like they're going to get hurt.

They dont hit hard enough to hurt each other.

You have a better chance of getting hurt at the age of 15-16 than you do at the age of 5-6

I don't know tgrbaitn08, you should do a little research of your own.

Agree. That's a lot better than throwing kids on a field at 5 and 6 years of age and just letting them run into each not knowing what they really should be doing (the way we played when I were a kid)

Someone in this thread asked me "why should they not go full contact at that age? It seems like they are less likely to get hurt because they are not hitting each other hard". What doesn't seem "hard" to an adult doesn't mean it isn't hard. Because they are small and their brain is not even close to be fully developed, it takes a lot less to have an impact on the brain.

If you're not on a travel pee wee team by now, you'll never get drafted.

Absolutely no point in playing football with pads until middle school.

Let him play flag up to that point.

i don't think he's too young i just can't really remember much about pee wee leagues. I really don't want him to get to 7/8's and be more hesitant because he's inexperienced with the tackling and aggression part of the game and be behind the 8 ball when kids are actually starting to fly around and make hits

You're worried about your kid being competitive in the 7/8 year old league?

CHrist, man.

No, not worried at all, he's going to be a star. But it is better for him to be comfortable and ridding himself of all newbie jitters out there. I think that'll make him less likely to get injured as well.

At that age it's like watching bumper cars.. you'll get some kids hitting with authority closer to ten..
