Maybe he was trying to stall and defuse the situation until the police arrived. Good thinking to maybe offer the guy a drink and calm down. The intruder was looking for Nancy and said he had no intention of hurting Paul until he saw the police.
Them opening the door holding a hammer together is the weirdest thing to me. Like apparently they were struggling over the hammer then the door just swings open and they freeze.
