Multiple 911 calls are revealing the dramatic chain of events at Methodist Hospital in San Antonio’s Medical Center.

“Yes, the 10th floor is full of smoke! And we’re pulling the people out and trying to get the oxygen shut off, but you can’t even see down the hall the smoke is so bad,” a nurse at the hospital can be heard urgently explaining to the emergency operator.

According to the incident report, the defibrillator used by the medical team arced and “a spark went off and ignited the oxygen in the room that had been accidentally left on.”

The dispatch operator asks the nurse reporting the incident if “the oxygen is causing it?”

The nurse replies, “We were trying to shut off the oxygen, but something ignited.”

According to a police report, Allen died after employees attempted to resuscitate him. Employees interviewed by police said Allen was dead before the fire happened.

Oxygen is always on an Ambu bag during a code...

I'd say that too, in hopes.

Technically it’s true. There would be no need for a defibrillator if it wasn’t true.

Oxygen itself is not flammable but it can worsen a fire.

Oxygen does not burn, but it is an oxidizer, which means it supports the process of combustion. This means, if you already have a fuel and a fire, adding oxygen will feed the flames. The reaction can be dangerous and violent, which is why it's never a good idea to store or use oxygen around any sort of flame.

Actually it's the opposite. Defibrillators are for patients who are alive. If the patient's heart has stopped, you don't use a defibrillator to revive.

Whew! That's a relief!

ETA: After Richard Pryor set himself on fire free-basing, he appeared on Johnny Carson one night.

Carson asked him what he learned from setting himself on fire.

Pryor replied, "I learned people get out of your way when you're on fire!"

Oxygen doesn't ignite I believe.

Something must be on fire and oxygen is needed for the gasses to form new molecules in the air. More oxygen hotter and faster rate of burn as gasses are released.

But, hey, I could be wrong. Feel free to Google.

Something caught on fire and the oxygen was so concentrated it went up fast and furious that it seemed it caught fire itself.

Incredible circumstances and accident.
