Again, this wasn't the actual security analysts and engineers who actually know and give a shite about this stuff. It was a group of auditors in India.

I've spent 20 years in healthcare and financial IT. fricking auditors are the worst.

Easy way around that is to start the password with a number and just keep increasing the number by one digit.

Amen. I especially love it when I talk to someone and they go "ya, I'm in cybersecurity/information security too." Then I ask if they work in a SOC, are an analyst, etc.

"No, I'm in security auditing."

Makes me want to throat punch them right then and there.

Agreed. It's why I'm glad I'm no longer working in banking IT.

Maybe it's just me but I always seemed to get the most fresh -faced rookie thinking he or she is going to get a promotion by trying to tell us who's boss, only to find out their checklist is outdated.

Not as bad as the FDIC examiner who bragged about getting someone fired, which never happened, and later was removed from the annual examination. Oh, don't call them auditors either, they'll remind you that they're examiners yet they do the same thing as auditors.

you frickers are the ones opening the spoofed emails too

No not quite that bad, I get spoof emails almost every day with the nature of my job and initiating pretty big $$ wires. I will say that sometimes when I'm not busy and get scam calls from the IRS or Social Security on my cell, I will call them from my office phone and frick with them as long as I can until they hang up on me

It's dumb as shite. My work password requirement is it can't contain any words it just has to be random letters and numbers and symbols with multiple capital letters. Who comes up with this crap

Can't make it easy for the brute force attackers out there.

Agreed. One capital, one character and one numeric. Those should be the only three requirements.

When they force to use an EXACT length (not minimum), that's when I usually lose it.

One site pissed me off so much that my password there is 'motherfricker', which they actually accepted.

I don't understand the logic behind that one. In order to know it was a previous password, the computer has to keep a log somewhere.

If that log gets hacked, the hackers have a pattern they can use. They know how everyone thinks. Whereas if you just change passwords, all they have is that one and you can make it something else.

Making people create a new password every so often leads to people creating simpler passwords or creating different variations of the same password ie subbing @ for an a but otherwise keeping the same word

It's called a hash. They aren't storing your passwords plain text
