What’s your current exercise program look like?
I have had many patients with partial knee before and the more active and better into resistance training they are the better outcomes I have observed.
If you aren’t very active now I would recommend either getting in a good PT clinic near you or start some sort of general exercise program that does not flare up your symptoms beyond a 20% increase in session and 24 hours post session

Had a partial 5 years ago. Easier quicker recovery than a total. Actually played 18 holes of golf 11 days after surgery, and not really a golfer just bored. Full speed except activity on knees, that hurts.

I’ve had friends who have had this and from what I gathered the quicker you have it done the better because the tendons have to be stretched back to accommodate the new knee. That’s what makes the rehab so painful is stretching them back out or you’ll wind up with a stiff leg unable to bend so be sure to endure the rehab.
I had a hip replacement and it was a piece of cake compared to the knee replacement. Good luck, you’ll be glad you got it done when it’s all over.

I use to walk three miles two or three times a week in hilly Arkansas. I am unable to do that now thus getting the surgery. I do a lot of walking doing yard work, but I pay the price for it. My knee is retaining fluid which prevents me from bending it and it keeps giving out. I have access to a stationary bike. The surgeon's assistant says they changed how they do post surgery. Instead of getting right into PT I would rest for two weeks doing particular exercises several times a day. My surgeon recently had this done and he had no PT. I have an appointment next week to go over more details.

My brother has a knee like this that was replaced that he admits he did not do the PT.

Best of luck
I had knee replacement discussions a year ago and the dr wanted to try gel injections first (in my 50s). He prefers a target age past 60 if possible.
The injections have been a godsend. Fingers crossed.
Now, this week had me in for my bad shoulder……flat out said it’s trash. I have no meaningful cartilage left for any alternate therapies. Not even PT!
Path forward is manage pain and keep working out as possible. When the pain gets too much, replacement.
Oh the days of football and powerlifting. Least I’m not poor ol Ronnie Coleman!!

Why not just knock out the whole thing?

Because the rest of the knee is in good condition. The bad part (inside the knee) is bone on bone with no cartridge due to arthritis.

Gen injections were discussed, but they had only a 50/50 chance of success. The partial knee replacement has a 90% chance of success.

I would (and did and won) take a 50/50 chance of a few injections with no down time vs a major surgery, if injections don’t work you can always do the surgery later

Had partial knee done (inside only). Will be three years ago in September. Most important thing is it to do your PT religiously for the first two weeks. Playing tennis and running around now like it is brand new now. Good luck with yours.

I had a total left knee replacement in February. For the first couple weeks I was mad at myself for having it. It was miserable.
It gets better. I stuck with my PT and within 6 weeks I was back to work. It’s been great and I can do everything I want to with minimal pain. The PT sucks and hurts bad but it’s the key to a full recovery.

What was the PT during the first two weeks? I want to be prepared. I have an appointment with the surgeon early next week to schedule the surgery. It most likely won't be until July.
