canal and rampart is a top 5 intersection in new orleans in terms of real estate value i'd imagine. someone will be building something tall there in the future.

Thats the million dollar question. Who will touch anything on that site without first being guaranteed payment by someone?

yup. no Doubt big bro. esp with a new street car line down rampart. it's arguably the ripest area for development in the entire city

In the end, this site will have everything above the parking garage demolished and will be a working parking garage and nothing more.

You won't see me parking in there..

May have been posted, but wow... On the twitter link, there was a worker (circled) on the edge as the building was collapsing... on the video you can see that he was running for cover, then everything around him crumpled... that is freaking terrifying...

Sorry, this picture had already being posted... still dramatic...

He was working near the ledge and was in a harness and tied in. He couldn't get out of it and run quick enough.

Sounds like the VCC or whoever is mad about the historic aspect and not like it is frickery with the structural design called out.

Opponents also suggested that Kailas was trying to get away with violating zoning rules that others must follow and that the project would violate the city's master plan. They said the mere idea of granting large waivers violates the basic spirit of the master plan, which was intended to set up uniform rules everyone must follow and to end the age-old custom of developers cutting special deals with council members.

There's been a big debate in local circles about the zoning for that side of Canal St (the FQ side).

The current zoning plan aligns that side of the street with more of the FQ rules.

A lot of people feel that for Canal St - facing buildings, the rules that are in effect for the Downtown Development District should be in play, especially considering there are so many grandfathered buildings on the FQ side of Canal St that well exceed the current zoning.

That's one reason the developer won the height waiver... it would be silly to tell them no when there are so many tall buildings already on that side of Canal that have been grandfathered into current zoning.

Not defending Kailas who is a snake, but this has been a big issue for a while.

So did he make it? Was he one of the workers killed or still missing?

Not to make light of the situation, but how long before the 9-11 conspiracy wackos start to rant about the building collapse was an 'inside job'?

I just walked down to have a look. It’s crazy just seeming Canal shut down like that.

Saw the Ruby Slipper is in the no go zone. Imagine just the money they are losing alone

NOLA.com just posted what appears to be pretty damning video of sagging concrete slabs 2 days before the collapse.

He did not make it. He was the first body found.

They said he wasn't scheduled to work Saturday, but he wanted to pick up extra hours.

Amazing that nobody had to sense to call a "stop work" after seeing those temp support columns buckling and water pooling in the sagging deck.

Not only payment, but complete indemnity if things go squirrelier. There's lots of buildings all over that need demolishing that don't come with the risk of ruin this project does. How do you convince a company to risk its existence on being able to bring this thing down without damaging anything nearby?
