2 in high school, private school K-12.

Tuition aside, I couldn't even begin to total it all up and then average it out. They've played all the sports at rec level, then at the select/travel level, done the private lessons in sports and music, bought all gear and uniforms, paid the team fees, travel expenses like Hampton Inn weekend upon weekend, eating out, gas (was much more expensive then).

Don't know. Don't want to know. It's all been for them and their development. Made some great friends along the way. It saddens me that I only have a few more years left to do it.

The kids each get to pick one thing a year.

I told my wife we are not running ourselves nuts and broke to do everything.

My girl does ballet @ $35 month. All year

My boy does soccer in fall and might do baseball in spring.

Last boy still too young.

Momma stays home with the kids as she quit teaching. I'm not going into the poor house over activities. I still like sitting at night eating as a family. I also have to work overtime and its hit or miss. Hard to do to much because of that alone.

I watched friends drive themselves and kids nuts and pay a fortune to do so...frick that

i could see where it might be worth it though if your kid ends up dominating other kids in their chosen activity

While it is certainly gratifying to see your child excel (mostly because this means that they've put in an extraordinary amount of hard work and out-trained the other kids), it also costs you in the long run because you have to match their commitment financially. In our organization, you can only use scores from a limited number of tournaments. Previously you could only use one of the two Nationals. This season you can use both - so if your kid has put in the work to be the best you can't NOT go to one of the Nationals..

frickkkk... My daughter is 3 and ballet alone is over a $100 a month! It's retarded... Then there is swim lessons which are $75 a month. Then gymnastics, that't $85 a month. All of that shite doesn't include all of the BS equipment and uniforms you have to purchase.... It's a rip off... But if my daughter enjoys it, which she does, then its worth it

3. not worth it

You and wifey need to decide whats best for your budget and family
or you can do what I did and let the wifey decide on everything. Her family thinks frugal is a damn French bugle, so my daughter took everything that came down the pipe: tumbling, piano, swimming, softball, voice lessons, to name a few. They'll narrow it down during junior high to 2 or 3 things. She just graduated after swimming for ASH through all of high school and she'll be in the La Tech choir next year.
Not bitching, just broke. . . . and proud.

Exactly.

If there is ever something to spend money on, it's my kids education and sports/activities that will influence them tremendously.

I must be the only parent here that doesn't partake in this shite.

We let our child play in the back yard and at friends houses. We take her on trips every so often: water parks, camping, special events, etc. We go to parks and play catch and hide and go seek. We don't spend a ton by any means. The trade off is that we actually spend time interacting with her.

A lot of you are paying through the nose to be shitty hands-off parents.

I have 2 daughters that cheer - both do school cheer and all-star (it's kind of like traveling baseball.
I spend 1100$ per girl for school cheer. I pay 300$ per month each, for all-star cheer PLUS the cost of shoes, uniforms etc AND the travel costs for competitions. I have never sat down and figured all that out and I never will. It would be too depressing.
Oh and the private lessons, can't forget the private lessons. Yep. That can 60$ an hour.
One daughter plays volleyball. That runs about $500 for school and I spend about $1500 for club for the season.
I have one that runs track - aside from shoes and uniform, I might spend a few hundred on speed camps.
Long story short, parents of young kids, get them on the track. It is the cheapest route. And there are a lot of scholarship opportunities for middle-distance runners.
Baseball? Forget about it. My son played school and travel ball. I am not going to think about what all that cost.

It's a shite ton of time and money, but it keeps them busy and out of trouble. They all need to do some kind of sport or activity.

On the plus sides my girls are making $20 to $30 per hour doing private lessons for younger kids. That sure beats the wages at the Chick Fil A.
If my kids are willing to put in the time and effort to excel at their chosen sports, I am willing to pay for it.

I don't really want to know. I know that between dance classes, middle school and high school dance teams, I spent a college education already and she is just entering high school.

We are also about to get reamed for pre-k. She starts August 2017 and tuition is $17,000 a year for three days a week. Assuming she gets in of course. Stringent application process which starts this September. I swear, NYC sucks some times.

Y'all in the Pass? I was under the impression that the public system there is very good, my side of the bridge not so much. Hell, I think private school over here is a bit weak...but hopefully St Stannislaus will be better.

$1325 for HS baseball
$1500 for travel ball
$750 for new catching gear and mitt
$325 for infielders glove
$270 for 1b mitt
$335 for -3 Aluminum bat
$180 for -3 bat

...and probably another bazillion for hotels, meals and fuel.

Eta:
I forgot the baseball camps. Lately we've been getting deals on the camps. On average we are paying $100 per showcase camp at various Universities vs the listed priced, which varies from $395 on up. Will be at LSU the end of this month for a camp.
