The Supreme Court has ruled public sector workers aren't required to join and pay union dues as a condition of employment. This will slash millions from union revenues.

Workers may have to actually earn raises and work now. THE HORROR!

The really screwed up part of this was that the Unions were allowed to do whatever they wanted with the funds that the courts allowed to be MANDATORY drafted from the employees paychecks.

Much of that money went to Democratic candidates for office. Should have been reversed years ago.

Pio may have been in support of the unions, but I'm sure some of his alters were against them. He may be conflicted now.

Government employees shouldn't have ever been allowed to organize in the first place.

Public sector unions are pure horseshite.

To be fair, you could opt out of full union dues and only pay for the collective bargaining portion as a "fair share act." the theory is they get the raises so they pay for collective bargaining, but in reality that's a bunch of bullshite.

Right, but to do so was extremely difficult. This new ruling means you have to opt-in.

When I was a union apprentice a long time ago this wasn't MANDATORY. However, you were bullied into paying it. Myself and one journeyman at my shop refused to sign the authorization letter when it was first presented to us. The next day our local's business manager showed up at our shop and berated and threatened us with a "YOU'LL BE SORRY!!!" Then he turns to me and says "You, you're still an apprentice. I own your arse".

The shop owner heard about it and 5 minutes later the business manager was back at our shop apologizing his arse off. Not sure what was said between him and our boss but he was scared.

To this day I fricking hate unions even though I recognize they do serve a purpose in a capitalist economy. However their tactics are still slimy as frick even sans knee- capping and putting sugar in gas tanks.

I could be mistaken, but I believe this ruling is only applicable to public sector unions.

The private sector can still have agency shops where agency fees are required.

I understand the idea of unions. Yes, robber barrons used to be legitimate jackasses, and employees really did "owe [their] soul to the company store." Unions were a way to have some pull against working extremes.

But I've always had a problem with MANDATING that part of my check went to the union for whatever they wanted. If I go to a college, I pay the college, and it does what it wants with the money I give it. If I don't like it, I don't go to the college if I don't like the speakers it brings to campus. But in working, I contract with the employer, not the union.

Freedom loving Americans should all be grateful for Mitch McConnell and his leadership in the Senate today. The man knows how to own the libs.

Great step in the right direction. Long term, public sector unions need to be outlawed.

When I was in the IBEW it wasn't required. That was about 20 years ago though. This being mandatory seems like an obvious civil liberties violation but there's no way the ACLU would ever call out any unions.

this is of the biggest lies Wal Mart Republicanism has sold to this country. Corporate greed never went away. It just found new methods. Wages have not kept up with inflation, yet corporate profits have soared. The "career employee" and things like pensions have become a thing of the past.

I have mixed feelings on the "forced" dues....but something you bring up shows the difference in public vs private and shows why they might be necessary.

State government workers in a Merit System for example, don't have an individual contract with their employer. Their employment is governed by laws, or at least is supposed to be. A single employee has virtually no power when those laws are violated, much less the ability to negotiate wages and other benefits.

The State of Alabama is stealing millions from it's employees now because the state personnel director perjured herself in a lawsuit.

Because they are financially unsustainable. See: state government pension programs.
