Paging OT Engineers…Dragline Hits Bridge and Bends Metal Girder

On Friday, a barge carrying a dragline struck one of the metal girders under the Houma Twin Span Bridges.
After initially closing the bridge for inspection, LaDOTD came back and said it was safe to drive over. HPD reopened the bridge. That beam looks pretty bent. Good think it wasn’t concrete it may have crumbled instead of bending.
Also, genius driving the boat also struck a medical building’s awning on the Intracoastal when backing up.

Really irresponsible of LaDOTD.

Note to self, use inside lane when driving over the Houma Bridge.

Good thing no one who matters lives in Houma

Not remotely a degreed engineer but:
They could determine the remaining strength of the damaged beam but it would take a lot of complex measurements then complex calculations. My guess is they ran the numbers to determine the "safe" working load of the bridge using only the other four beam spans assuming upon inspection they were undamaged and the supports for the deck were intact and had little or no damage and could still safely support the part that is now cantilevered outside the last undamaged beam.

FYI…that bridge is the Main Street side.
You can always drive under the Intracoastal by driving through the Tunnel.

Sometimes a bend hardens the steel.

If I'm looking at the picture right that's the side leading to East Houma so that part would be the pedestrian walkway, so not a lot of load there if so.

What's the computer game where you build bridges with the least amount of pieces and see if a heavy truck can drive over it?

I found a couple (did not play them)
Bridge Builder and Construct A Bridge

This is just my opinion, but I think there are a lot of bridges in Louisiana (and probably all over the country) that are not as safe as we think.
