Novo Nordisk on Thursday surpassed Tesla in market valuation after the maker of the popular weight-loss drug Wegovy and Ozempic announced positive early trial data for a highly anticipated new obesity drug.

Shares surged more than 8% to record highs, shooting Novo Nordisk up in global rankings to the 12th most valuable company from 14 previously, after it told investors a Phase I trial of the pill version of experimental drug amycretin showed participants lost 13.1% of their weight after 12 weeks.

That compares to a weight loss of about 6% after 12 weeks and 15% after 68 weeks in trials for Wegovy, its blockbuster obesity drug.

Investors welcomed the news as indicating Novo had more in its pipeline beyond its hugely successful Wegovy.

Wegovy belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 agonists, originally designed to treat type 2 diabetes, that have been shown to reduce food cravings and empty the stomach more slowly.

Following the success of these drugs, companies are working on other promising weight-loss therapies such as amycretin which targets a hormone called amylin in the pancreas that affects hunger.

Before all the crazy comments, I know of 3 people that used it, dropped a ton of weight, and also changed their lifestyle completely. They are now fitness fanatics.

That's about 33 lbs for a 250 lb person. Significant but I wouldn't call it a miracle cure.

How much did they lose, how long did it take them, and did they have any serious side effects?

If you also change your lifestyle, it's significantly more. One friend dropped 85lbs, another is in the 120lb range.

How many years until the class action commercials start airing?

Have a hard time believing there won't be something from this. Everybody and their grandmother is using this to be like Oprah.

For every person that uses it to change their life, there’s 10+ that brow beat their doctor into it to lose 20lbs without changing anything about themselves or taking any responsibility for their lifestyle.

I don’t hate either story, because anything to let us have less fat people is a net positive imo. Just wish more people did it the right way.

All these motherfrickers on Ozempic are going to have some terrible side effects and sue the shite out of everyone involved. I give it 3 years until the class action commercials are all over our TVs.

I bet the doctors don't care. Telling them to "lose weight or you're going to die" clearly isn't working, so why not put them on the magic pill that literally forces them to not eat? If they're going to have bad habits at least they'll be physically restricted from one of them: engorging themselves. And I'm kind of inclined to agree. Why have fat people with bad habits when you can make them slightly less fat and keep the rest of the habits?

I've been the motivator with my friends, helping them learn some aspects of running and weight lifting. It helps when you have friends that are already doing that, and can keep you motivated. Sadly, I think you're right about some people.

There’s no free lunch in nature. I’d imagine there’s going to be at least some blowback at some point.

This isn't much different than Botox being used "off label" for migraines, hyperhidrosis, etc.

Tucker Carlson interview with ex pharma executive about these drugs

The drugs in that class are not approved, or studied for long term risks. This is a good watch.

Right, I agree on a certain level. I hope there’s not large scale long term effects because so many people are jumping on the band wagon.

If you weigh 380 the risks of side effects outweigh the health benefits. It’s the people who use it to drop 25lbs that will be sorry if those chickens decide to come home to roost

This is a lot fricking different than that

Ozempic messes with your hormones to trick your body into slowing the digestive system. It completely alters crucial bodily functions and can seriously and negatively impact body composition (muscle/fat ratio). It can also permanently frick up the gut.

This is a lot more invasive than superficial injections under the skin to locally relax muscles that are essentially just local nerve blocks.

Yeah I agree with this. If you're morbidly obese, Ozempic is worth the risk. If you're trying to shed the dad bod for the post-divorce bar scene, you're going to reap what you sow.

well i mean its been the market for a long long arse time and its just a peptide so i highly highly doubt there will be but

there are those doctors that are willing to bump patients to the highest dose very quickly without lifestyle changes and there are patients who refuse to change eating habits

so the medicine does what it is designed to do and punishes you to try and get you to change...some wont listen though so im sure there will be some

as far as it being pulled off the market type issue

frick no. the science behind it is very very sound and been studied since the 80s. yall act like this about every new medicine though.
