Are all of y'all lawyers? I don't understand this board's obsession with the legal job market when none of you are actually in it?

I don't know how true the stat was, but I was watching The Devil's Advocate last night and there's a scene where Al Pacino says there are more students in law school than there were active lawyers at the time. That was 1997, so it seems like we were headed for an oversupply if the stat was true.

With the combined over-saturation of the legal market, declining wages, sky-high tuition, opportunities in other fields, and low bar passage rates, law school just isn't that attractive these days. I really wanted to go to law school and got a great scholarship offer, but I just couldn't stand to afford to spend 3-4 years of my income potential on something with such dubious potential returns when I had a job offer out of school for close to what new employed lawyers make coming out of law school. I just couldn't justify it, logically. I would like to some day get that law degree, though.

That seems wildly wrong. According to this 45,000 law students graduate every year. LINK / Times 3, about 150,000 law students.

According to this there are over 1.2 million lawyers in the US. (Although not all licensed JDs are actually working as lawyers.) LINK

So Al was way off. But what do you expect from the prince of lies.

A good friend of mine got his Chemical Engineering degree then after about 10 years in the industry went to Law School at night with the Univ. Of Houston. He was married with 3 kids and was working full time. He got through it, but ended up staying in his Engineering field because the law opportunities were just not as lucrative. He is doing well with a big oil company but would tell you he wasted lots of time and effort getting a degree he never used.

Lawyers are basically secretary/salesmen hybrids.

I'd rather just be shot in the dick with buckshot.

Groundbreaking post!

This country could use about a 90% drop in the lawyer population if you ask me. I'd also like to see a law that prevents lawyers from running for public office aside from DA.

Back in 2008, associates at big firms made $125,000 straight out of school. But by last year, that had dropped to $95,000.

I don't think this part is true at all. If you are comparing apples to apples, those big firms are paying more than ever to new associates. They may be hiring less first year associates but that is a different point. The first year associates they do hire are starting at a higher salary than they were in 2008.
