Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome released this statement regarding the closing of the Sam's Club by Cortana Mall:

"My office was informed yesterday of the closure of Sam’s Club at 9598 Cortana Place. Sam's Club is closing 63 stores nationwide, attributing the decision to the need to better fulfill online orders, less population growth than expected in some markets, and too many competing locations.

I reached out to Sam's Club and am committed to working closely with their team to develop and execute a transition strategy. Our goal is to ensure that all 176 displaced employees are either transferred to nearby Sam's Clubs or Walmarts or are assisted with job placement and/or training.

I am also involved in a number of conversations regarding the revival of the property at Cortana Mall. It has great potential to be a catalyst for economic development in our parish. There are obviously many shifts taking place in the retail industry nationally, but we are fortunate that we continue to have a growing retail base here in Baton Rouge."

property at Cortana Mall
Just burn it down.

That location will not recover and buildings of that caliber and design are hard to transition to anything other than shopping centers.

Just nuke it.

No it doesn't. Best case scenario is that it turns into a big warehouse or distribution center.

Just nuke everything north of Florida Blvd and turn it into the world's biggest TopGolf. Nothing up there is of value to this city.

Which is a catalyst for economic development. Bigger than retail, actually.

If a warehouse is a catalyst for economic development than we are in bigger trouble than I thought. It will probably turn into a big mini storage.

How sad is it that my mayor, the guy who texts 17 year old boys, is seen as the competent major in the area

I can't even imagine the deferred maintenance on that property. They were selling it from under $3 million last I checked. There must be easily millions in maintenance that would have to be performed to put it back in use.

She's not involved in any conversations, because nobody is stupid enough to stick their business in north Baton Rouge.

Retail is simply economic substitution.

Entities like distribution centers, professional services, manufacturing, etc. are typically bringing in investment from outside the area. Thus are not a substitution of local dollars...and provide more economic activity for the parish.

I do t remember the details, but read that the entire heating/cooking system would have to be replaced. That can’t be cheap.
