Common practice. They have to make cross country trips as part of their qualifications. It used to be well known that pilots would schedule their trips to land at the NAS in NOLA during Mardi Gras and use their “crew rest” hours to party in the Quarter. The practice was stopped when it got so bad that they didn’t have room to park all the jets.

They still do this.. they had 2 squadrons at the NAS in Belle Chasse last year... they left the day after Endymion, and from what they told me, they’re trying to come back this (next) year

I know a guy who used to fly helicopters for a reserve/guard unit out of Hammond. They would call in a lunch order to a place in Houma that apparently had delicious food at the right price. They would put down in a field next to the restaurant and send their crew chief in to pick up lunch and be gone in a few minutes.
Eventually, they tired of the food getting cold on the return flight to Hammond, so they started quickly eating in the helo, and then taking off. That got old too, so their next move was to just shutdown and go inside to eat, leaving one man as “security”. It got to the point where there might be two or three helicopters in the field and it was starting to draw some negative attention, so they had to find a new lunch spot.

Guaranteed there is more to this story. It’s not uncommon for the Air Force to toss you the keys to a jet on a weekend and pretty much say “Don’t come home until you’ve put X amount of hours on it”. We try our best to maximize the training in those situations, but we also maximize the fun. Weekend X-C is just one of the perks of the job.
