Common practice. They have to make cross country trips as part of their qualifications. It used to be well known that pilots would schedule their trips to land at the NAS in NOLA during Mardi Gras and use their “crew rest” hours to party in the Quarter. The practice was stopped when it got so bad that they didn’t have room to park all the jets.

Many military pilots do this on the reg. Ops schedules flight and the aircraft ends up having issues. Done quite often on long weekends and the pilots even pack bags
