No. They also may cause your body to react as if it has had sugar.
Thought this was pretty much debunked at this point, even for diabetics

This is my favorite nutrition website for these kind of questions:

As all current research has found diet soda sweeteners to be safe per se, a tentative conclusion is that diet soda is harmless when paired with an otherwise controlled diet; many people who have bad diets consume diet soda in an attempt to do "less damage" - this results in an incorrect conclusion that diet soda leads to an unhealthy condition.

A couple of things I've heard is that aspartame prevents weight loss, and that it can be better to just drink a naturally sugared drink because your body knows sugar and can process it. Artificial sweeteners tell your body that it's sugar but when it isn't processed as sugar your body basically asks for it.

Any developments since a study published in 1991?

Yes. They are terrible. Because many people, because they are "diet", drink five a day. Well that ain't healthy.
If I drink a soda, I am only having one, and it's gonna be a regular. Sugar tastes better and is not as carcinogenic. Now if you're an idiot and drink 5? Well 5 diet cokes are better for you than 5 regular. But both are terrible.
I have made myself addicted to fruit water. Slice of lemon and or lime in a Contigo or Tervis glass. Pound that shite all day.
Dr. Pepper has its place. If you are gassy, Dr. Pepper will cure it. 5 minutes and I am gonna have an awful belch, but it's coming out.

If you have to ask, you know the answer.
Not saying I don't have the occasional Coke Zero, but I stick to water for the most part. At least when I'm not drinking beer.

Doesn't aspartame give you cancer?

I don't think this is true. The issue is that people who tend to drink artificial sweeteners are trying to change something in an already unhealthy lifestyle. So people who drink artificial sweeteners are already craving sugar
Does aspartame increase appetite?

My brother in law is a nutritionist and body builder, drinks coke zero quite a bit these days when he's not getting ready for competitions.
He didn't for a long time while he was getting in shape, but now that he is, he doesn't worry about it too much.

In fairness, doesn't everything nowadays?

There's evidence suggesting that your body responds similarly to diet drinks compare to a regular Coke. The molecules of artificial sweeteners and sugar are apparently very similar to where our body thinks it is sugar and realeases insulin but there's no sugar for the insulin to grab. So now there's insulin just floating around in your bloodstream which is actually a poison. All that being said, I still drink Coke Zero every day

There is a ton of misinformation on here.
Artificial sweeteners are among the most heavily researched food additives in history, and according to the National Cancer Institute and other health agencies, there's no sound scientific evidence that any of the artificial sweeteners approved for use in the U.S. cause cancer or other serious health problems.
Now, you may not lose weight ingesting them. They've done studies with rodents that showed a paradoxical weight gain. They've also been linked to diarrhea, migraines, and tinnitus. However, for the most part, artificial sweeteners are completely safe to consume. There is also the added benefit that they don't lead to cavities.

Not only this, but your body thinks it just had sugar. So all of those horrid high carb, fat depositing systems in your body kick in.

Studies shmudies and that was probably in mice or rats. Even if true, making you crave something does not make you ingest it. Also, the amount of sugar in one 64 Oz drink is huge. So, unless a diet big gulp makes you drink a regular big gulp, then stick to the diet ones.

I'm one of the most fit people you'll find, bodybuilding wise, and I drink diet cokes. Is it good? Probably not

but it is better than the alternative.
I only drink water, but the problem is that people drink diet coke and then think they can eat more.
