yea he is going to lose his arse. Now if he wants to be a trainer and has space in his garage he could start there.

OP you really need to go over to bb.com equipment forum. A ton of knowledgeable people there, way more so than here on this subject.

bottomline is there is no real money in this business unless you are like schmelly and do PT and can draw customers that away or you are like crossfit well essentially cf or you are a chain gym.

Only other way to really make it is to either A) buy and flip used equipment until you have essentially gotten all the equipment you want for free(good luck as its an extremely competitive market) or you get the equipment and sublease to multiple private trainers like schmelly who are willing to pay to use your equipment.

It is essentially rock climbing without a rope. The problems tend to be harder and more strenuous, but also much shorter and not as sustained. You put crash pads in potential landing (fall) zones and have spotters stand behind you so if you fall you don't go backwards onto your head

This. My friend had all his own equipment that when he left his previous gym, just rented some warehouse space and moved it all there. He already had a following since most powerlifters from around here trained with him so it was easy to pull those guys. All he did at first was open it in the afternoons when he trained but then he got a security door with a keypad for access 24 7.

And this is IN the gym??? Or outside of it? I'm guessing they conveniently built the gym next to this? I'm confused, but that's cool as hell

I'll give you some useful info, just in case we haven't already completely discouraged you and you decide to pursue it.

$50 ain't gonna cut it. Just a shot in the dark, it needs to be closer to $100 or more. You're not gonna draw 750 members like an Anytime. You're a specialty gym and pricing should be treated as such

Revenue streams...have multiple. meal planning, meal service, products, specialty classes like a "learn to deadlift correctly" class, personal training. That can all be things you don't need an employee to do. Then I'd look to cut some deals with people who provide things that go hand in hand with what you do and draw from the same market. Ex: I'm about to sublease one of my offices to a girl who does spray tans, make up & waxing. I train 80% women. She cuts me a check, stays out of my hair and introduces me to her clientele. Win. Anyway, hope this helps. Used to have a massage therapist. That was perfect...but he left cause the music was too loud, lol.

Both inside and outside. We have all that shite in Boulder. Multiple climbing gyms, and lots of places to climb outside (bouldering or rope climbing). It's better to train inside, and just generally easier to do a lot of the time. You wouldn't believe what a lot of people over the age of 50 are capable of here. I saw a group of senior citizens absolutely crushing it yesterday. This is what the inside of my gym looks like

Lots of pro athletes that the southerners will never know of in their lifetimes come through this gym. Did some climbing there with Cedar Wright yesterday, but no one here probably knows who that is to appreciate it

You ever find yourself out this way shoot me an email at hippietiger420 at the gmail and I can bring you outside to climb a fun 5.6. I always do it for my southern friends when they come in, and they absolutely love it

I was on the verge of attempting this a few years ago before getting a job offer I couldn't turn down. I had already purchased all of the equipment for it ( including numerous items you mentioned) and had started negotiations on a location. My intentions were identical to yours, but In hindsight I am glad it didn't happen. To generate revenue with a gym you have to excel in personal training and merchandise sales. It is damn near impossible to compete with box gyms from a membership fee perspective and most of the people you are targeting in the fitness sector are on the lower end of the income scale. This means they are more sensitive to prices, which compounds the pricing issues. The back breaker for me was the cost of insurance. Just make sure you get a good business plan together before diving in.

I have seen and been to some of the best strength gyms in the country and most of them are shitholes and the owners aren't swimming in cash. If you dodecide to pursue opening the gym feel free to contact me and I'll pass on any helpful info I can provide. BTW I still have an arse load of equipment in storage if you would like to buy it. It would make my wife extremely happy lol.

The sign up contract is where the big gyms make sure they get their money.

Making people pay a sign up fee anf continue to pay (preferably via credit/debit card or EFT that comes automatically so they don't have to worry about collecting from members in person) each month. This way they get paid by the people who sign up the first week of January, work out/exercise til about this time of year, if that long, and then quit going.

Also, you will need plenty of mirrors around the walls for people to pick their face in and plenty of blow dryers in the locker room for the old men to dry their balls with.

From an advanced lifter perspective I would love a gym like this.

From a business perspective I would laugh if an idea like this was presented to me. If you were an ifbb or Olympic medal winning lifter it would work. Otherwise you would make no money.

If I was ever ot baller status I would enjoy opening a gym like this to workout and be around like minded people. But I definitely would not expect an income from it.
