I think they are just easy to shite on because they have a name that is recognizable, and they are a brand that entry level professionals who are trying to present an image buy because tag has options that start out around $1000-$2000. ETA 2824 movements are quality, and I'm pretty sure that there are even relatively high end watches that use it. It's just that you can find the 2824 also in like $300 watches. (not the exact same movement, but the same design)
ETA: Personally in that range I think that I would buy a Sinn (or maybe Ball). I just think that they are more interesting brands, and Sinn has the German over-engineered thing going for them. Probably actually useless, but still cool to think about. I'm pretty sure these brands also use the ETA 2824, but they don't get shite on for it.

Nice, I'm wearing my ball trainmaster moonlight special as we speak.

True, it's not the same movement but I see where the comparison comes from.
I've been told not to spend more than $5k on a Tag because it isn't worth it. I think the mindset is that if you can spend that money just move to Omega. Tag is "entry level" no doubt, but that's not a bad thing. The quality is definitely there.
It's also a matter of how serious you want to get. I'm more into cars than watches so something has to give

now I'm wondering if people notice my shite quartz movements out in public and talk shite.
Probably notice, but won't talk shite unless it's a fake Rolex or something like that

My next one will be either a Ball or Doxa

I would buy a Rolex, no date, Sub -- simple, durable and timeless. The no date Sub is frequently imitated yet remains the standard. I personally like the new ceramic bezel. You may want a gently used 4 or 5 number (serial number) watch depending on your tastes.
Many people will tell you to not buy a Rolex. I suspect they don't own one. I've worn a Rolex in some form or fashion for over 30 years. I've never regretted any of my purchases. My advice is buy the watch and wear it like you stole it. In 40 years hand it over to a grandson -- point out the dings and tell him the stories behind them.

High quality guns and knives are right there.

I also like the idea of buying a birth year watch as an heirloom.
Me too. Rolex Submariner would be my choice. But 1973 is a pricey year. They were apparently doing the Red Submariner writing on the dial. I think entry level on those is $10,000. And thats in poor condition.

While not in the same price range or brand cachet as what we are discussing, I have found Marathon to be the equal of almost any watch with regards to metal finishing and quality. Great choice if you are looking for a tool watch or want something a cut above the ubiquitous Luminox.

You can still get a 5513 Submariner from that year. The 1680 had the red writing.
Here is one of my 1972's 5513. Nice faded bezel and tritium that has turned slightly yellow.
With steel band

16600 I believe. $2900 I think it was. I wanted a new computer at the time. SO glad my dad pushed the issue. My parents live very simple and don't spend money like that. I'll cherish it forever.

Nice! I have a 1984 16660 matte dial.

But the concept of Rolex being a starter nice watch while recommending Omega (a far more appropriate BMW 3 series comparison) is amusing.
I do find it amusing too. To me, an even more comparable example would be Breitling. And I own one.
Next watch for me will be an omega. I really like this very classic looking model, but I can't decide if it's super cheesy that's it's the "James bond edition"

Yes, rare vintage automobiles.

Also, I'm just not a Rolex Submariner fan. I get the nostalgia and whatnot, but they're almost too basic these days as far as design goes. Take a look around and you can find dozens of shite brands that look almost the exact same.
Immitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I'm not a fan of how many people try to pull off a sub mariner as an all around watch. It's not the watch to wear with a suit. It's a dive watch. But it's the most affordable Rolex, so every 100k a year millionaire rocks it like they just made the big time watch game. I'm not knocking them for what they are though, just the image they get. When I get a dive watch, it will be a birth year (86) submariner. But like I said, it will be on a black rubber strap and will be worn with shorts and jeans and stuff when I'm being all outdoorsy or on boats.

Tag Heuer gets a lot of hate
why
I think Tag gets a lot of hate because it's another brand that people tend to jump to without knowing crap about the watch. They pay 1200 for a quartz movement and couldn't even tell you the difference between a quartz and an automatic. Then, when you get to auto movements, they don't even realize that most of the affordable (4-6k) are going to be ETA movements (and I'm not knocking ETA, my watch is ETA). They are going to pimp the Tag name brand hard, but not really know what they got. It's like they bought a Sportscar, but have no idea what the engine is, they just know it's got the fancy emblem on it. Might have a 4 cylinder in there, might have a turbo charged v8....typical Tag owner probably doesn't know the difference. Again, that's the perception at least. I'd certainly wear a Tag (I like the calibre 6 in rose gold), but I know there are probably 10 of them in my office on wrists of people who don't know that the movement is the same as a quartz watch you can get at Zale's.
