OT watch baws - Seiko mod arrived

A few people were asking on a watch thread a few weeks ago where I posted a pic of a new beater/travel watch I ordered and it just arrived. I wanted something similar to my BY 16800 because I wear it daily. I started looking for a beater/travel watch when I had a partial clasp failure and realized I really didn't want to chance losing it. My first one was a deep blue, which is a great utility watch and I'll keep it as a diver but it's just too hefty for daily use for my liking. I found a guy who makes customs with a Seiko automatic movement and decided to give it a shot.
I'm trying not to compare it to the 16800 because they're obviously not in the same stratosphere, but its hard not to since I wear every day. First off it more closely resembles a 1680 style with the domed acrylic. The case feels decent but not quite as solid. The only things that really bothered me was the clasp, which I swapped out for a spare Ginault glide I had laying around. The bracelet feels a bit cheap, but I think it'll be fine once I wear it in some. Worse case I'll throw it on a nato or silicone. I tried putting the entire Ginault bracelet on but it wouldn't fit. Overall, I think it's worth it. For a few hundred bucks I have something I can wear out of town and not worry about and it feels close enough to the OG to not bother me.

Congrats you have a Seiko

I bought my Seiko Dive watch back in 1992 and it is still going strong. Little beat up, but it works.

Love it. Where did you get it?

Wait, is the point of it to look like the Rolex? If so that feels a little trashy. I’d rather just spend the couple hundred bucks and get a decent Citizen or something that isn’t trying to look like something else.

The point is that I love my 16800 and I wear it so much anything that different feels weird to me. But, I travel a lot and after almost losing it from a clasp issue and worrying about having to replace a 40yo watch, I decided to find something to travel with, spray sun screen all over, etc. If leaving the rolly at home safe when I'm getting out in the field or traveling is trashy, I'm cool with that.

I like it and I have always been fascinated my the Seiko modding culture. If anyone ever comes out with what I think is an interesting rainbow dive dial reminiscent of the 70s divers I will be building one. There are good options including vintage but I keep wanting to do a Seiko mod because my one Seiko beater is getting too beat.
That's a name that will stir some controversy, probably not here but on WUS and definitely TRF. He does commission quality parts though.

But I was thankful to be able to grab a clasp while I sent mine back to MY to get fixed again.

Super cool idea for a beater watch….Seikos are fantastic
I bought an Alpina GMT Startimer and am waiting for the tools to put a NATO strap on it to use as my beater. I think it will look pretty cool when done.

And, I thank you- but my wife is pissed now.
I’ve wanted an automatic Seiko for a while- your Etsy guy is legit.
Gracias!

Watch collectors seem to have a unique attitude to this sort of thing, particularly when it comes to dive watches. I like it.
Just about every big watch company makes a watch that looks like that. You mentioned Citizen- they definitely make dive watches that look pretty damn close to the Rolex and the Seiko.
I've always *assumed* that Rolex came up with the design first, but it doesn't seem to matter. These are functional devices that sell on engineering more than design.
