My dog (5yrs / catahoula) has come down with sever pain in one of his hind legs. About 7 days ago we noticed he would yelp at times when running. Now all of a sudden he won't even stand up.

I have examined him throughly by squeezing his joints, bones, and muscles from the hip down to the paw while he lays down and he shows no sign of pain. As soon as he tries to stand, he yelps and lays back down.

Any ideas from the experts?? I googled and I'm leaning towards arthritis. If it weren't a Friday at 6:00, I'd bring to vet.

5 years seems young for arthritis. Nothing stuck in his pads?

No, I checked. Was thinking the same. I'm almost certain it's in the hip. He's suffering, may have to go to vet. I'll give it an hour, I guess

Where are you located?
LSU is open 24/7 & the consultation fee is 100.00.
They will examine then tell you what they think needs to be done, like x-rays, give you a price then move forward if you choose to do so.
While it can be expensive & they take their time (prepare to be there a few hours) it's worth it for after hours care.

Not a vet. Have a similar dog with similar symptom.

Patellar subluxation. Have you looked that up? I can pop my dogs back in. It will be a problem as she ages.

That might be it.

There is a way to slide it back into place. Firmly press (not crazy firm) the tendon or muscle from middle inner thigh. Continue pressing outward as you run hand down the leg. If you feel it pop back to the middle, you're the hero. Lol.

You said it's been days though? Muscles may be too tight by now. My dog looked like she thought about biting me one time. Before I got the hang of doing it.

You can also just have the dog sit on her arse. Try to slowly straighten that leg like a person would look sitting. Of course within reason. My dog has got the hang of doing it herself this way. Whether she knows why it works or not.

Ligament tear, common for dogs that age/size. Will likely require surgery, if not they will give it some doggy NSAIDs. Do not give your dog people NSAIDs.

ETA - keep your pet in the kennel for rest until you get to the vet.

Until proven otherwise, based on your dog's age and the signs that you've listed, likely an ACL tear. It's the most common orthopedic injury in dogs.

As a few other vets/other posters have said, CCL rupture (equivalent of ACL rupture in humans) is probably what you're looking at as most likely. Would need x Rays to help diagnose along with a good orthopedic exam from vet (look up cranial drawer testing, not recommended to do it at home yourself). Surgery is your gold standard for treatment, otherwise loading up on NSAIDs, pain meds and joint supplements etc

Catahoulas are not a typical breed for patellar luxation (tho it's possible) would be strange for it to manifest suddenly like in your pooch.

Unlikely a bite of any kind (insect, snake, etc) as significant swelling is typically associated with those injuries.
