Here is the most likely correct answer.

See your vet next week. If it is a torn ACL be prepared to spend a good bit to get this fixed. Good news the surgery is usually very helpful and lasts for the life of the dog.

Also, the intense pain is often an indication of a torn meniscus. Sometimes you can hear a slight clicking when they walk. Once this is relieved the pain is much much better.

If it is this and you do decide to go with surgery you must follow post-op instructions to the letter. I've seen horrific consequences b/c owners let the dog do whatever

Vet ASAP. And regardless of the diagnosis, give him glucosamine chondroitin daily. It works.

Could be a torn claw. One of my dogs had that. Vet needs to remove it if that is what it is. Hoping it is that simple.

Patellar luxation is more common in small breeds. Large size breeds can get patellar luxation, but they often go in different directions(lateral as compared to medial in small breeds). ACL can more likely be the case. He may have hyperextended his leg causing that ligament to rupture. Rest and NSAIDs are required until you see your vet.
