Hell, we test so much and in my SLT's last I saw 30% growth on their reading scores yet their standardized test scores showed only a 14% growth from the previous year. So what gives? It means standardized test where we tell kids this means everything is fricking stupid when they're showing growth on another test we give

Even the young ones don’t buy that line anymore.

I have plenty that still ask if they don't don't get a basic if it means they will stay in the same grade

I just cant wrap my head around the thought of parents complaining about standardize tests confirming their childs legit knowledge
Every damn year you see these news stories with parents complaining about how stressful standardized testing is on their kids. It's horseshite.
standardized testing days were the best. You'd take a easy as shite 2 hour test than chill out and watch movies for the rest of the day.
Parents/teachers are just whiny arse losers

Really? I haven’t heard that asked in years.

Yup because we still tell children that it is huge and put unwanted pressure on them

I don’t know where you went to school, but growing up they couldn’t even take up the test until about 1:30 in the afternoon. And you couldn’t do anything until the test was taken up.
So generally I finished the test in about 45 minutes and then got to sit doing absolutely nothing until lunch. Those days weren’t relaxed. They were a complete waste of time.

That is not surprising, I think you said you teach Social Studies. If you are in an "underprivileged" school and you are doing the right thing, their reading skills should go up pretty high since their reading tends to be very low. So 8th graders who are reading at a third grade level with decent instruction might now be reading at a 6th grade level. However the LEAP Tests are testing for the MEAN, and you are trying to improve kids with low intelligence whose families have little cultural literacy with a test that is heavy in logic, so 14% growth from one area of Social Studies to another is actually rather good.

School promote kids all the time because they are penalized for keeping kids back. So a student who hasn't mastered 1st grade reading skills is put in second grade and then by the time they're in 4th or 5th they are 2+ grade levels behind

OT Teachers: what’s the reason behind the standardized annual tests?
Politicians have no idea how education works, do they want to see test results.

Exactly. And they never...catch...up.

Grew up in Texas taking the TAKS test every year. I remember being released before lunch which was around 11 or 12

I prefer research, analysis, design, and reflection, but I suppose that is just my take. I guess memorizing useless info because it is "on the test" makes for good teaching. The reality is that if the test is poorly designed or ineffectively administered, then the benefit to the student is probably limited. Just my .02.
Your "research, analysis, design, and reflection" is what the state does to determine what is important for the kids to know. That's what is then used to create the standardized test for the year. It is then the teacher's job to teach that material -- not do their own research on what they think that 5th-grade kids should really learn in their math class.
Of course all standardized tests fall short of the ideal test that would perfectly measure the material that they should teach for the year. That's no excuse for teachers to instead create their own "projects" that they think are more important to teach than the curriculum which will teach the state standards.
So much whining about standards and standardized tests is just from teachers who are annoyed that they can't just do whatever they want in their classes instead of teaching what they are supposed to teach.

That isn't the fault of the standardized test. That's on the school and the school district. Lots of schools have special programs designed to help those kids catch up.
