With that kind of fever you have to check for sepsis.
And you have to check every entrance for infection.

Blood, urine, etc.
CXR to make sure it isn't pneumonia. Gotta wait for the radiologist to read the cxr.

If a person comes in with a high fever with no obvious cause, liability of doctors and fear of litigation against them forces then to check EVERYfrickINGTHING. Would you rather they send you home with antibiotics without checking the blood, urine, and cxr??

Want to see how great our healthcare system is, go anywhere else and compare.

Earth, did she have a viral or bacterial infection? I ask because one of my adult sons ran a high fever, went to a doc in the box, and left with an antibiotic prescription and a diagnosis of pharyngitis. The high temp thing seems to have recently happened to several people I know. Hope she does well.

Not sure yet. They’re doing more testing on the blood they drew. He vitals were good enough to send her home so we’ll see. I just got her home and tucked into bed. I’m wondering if she picked up some sort of bug in Mexico? We stayed at Unico 20 89 Resort last week. But I’m perfectly fine.

Not enough doctors.

When i worked and lived in Minneapolis, Inwas shocked at how quickly I could get into see a ER physician (three young children so it happened a few times). In addition. If you weren’t in the waiting room for a routine doctors visit at the time of your appointment, they skipped you and moved on.

We never waited for an appointment to see a doctor there. If your appointment was 1:30, they called you back at 1:30.

I think it’s just a numbers game to some extent.

Not in Baton Rouge. They'll run you through intake and dump you in the waiting room with everyone else.

I have been to the ER three times in ten years, all for kidney stones. You get in quickly with stones, especially when I had one bigger around than a quarter.

The ER is nothing more than a glorified doctors office for people without insurance.

This. And until this changes, nothing will change.

They backed up man. Be thankful that Covid ended entire families from congregating in the lobby, raiding the vending machines, sucking in the A/C because Auntie was having heart palpitations and she needed all the kids, nephews and grandchildren by her side the entire time.

I had an employee a few years ago that called in one day because his lil cousin had to go to the ER in the middle of the night because he was really sick. I asked him “what does that have to do with you?”

All about the symptoms you come in with, the ABCs of nursing/medical school get you immediately back (airway, brain/breathing, cardiac)

Like back in the day a friend was the bat boy his brothers high school team and ended up getting hit with a bat on his torso. Kid had been drinking blue powerade all day, the ER got worried he was hypoxic, so they sprinted him straight to a bed with oxygen pumping lol

Poors using it as primary care is the biggest reason

1. Poors use ER for primary care

2. They have to treat most critical patients first

If your care can wait 5 hours, you probably shouldn’t be in the ER.

ER’s are flooded with people who treat it like they should be treating primary care. This is a huge problem and has been for a long time. Nothing is ever done about it.

And another thing: For more serious patients, there are barely enough hospital beds in Baton Rouge to handle a normal day’s worth of issues.

So when they were worried about being overwhelmed by Covid or RSV…. they don’t contextualize that by sharing how they are almost overwhelmed at baseline or that we probably need another hospital somewhere. Or for Oschner to be a place that patients don’t actively try to avoid.

This! My daughter works in the ER occasionally and says its disgusting how many people come in with colds, and very minor stuff instead of going to an Urgent Care or primary doctor.

Squeaky wheel gets the grease. Wife broke her wrist two weeks ago we went to the ER in the strip mall down the street she was screaming and crying bloody murder. There were at least 10-15 in the waiting room but I’m sure she was making such a scene in agonizing pain they took her back in 15. She fricked it up so bad she had to have surgery 4 days later.

Correct me if wrong: most Urgent Care will charge you up front, ER will bill you and some people simply never pay.
