re: OT PHOTOGRAPHERS: Sony, Canon, or Nikon? Help me pick a new camera

My everyday camera is a Fuji XT-20 mirrorless with a 35mm lens. Love this camera.
I'll bring out the dslr with the 70-200mm for certain situations, but I love the look of Fuji's photos. The body also looks like an old school film camera.

If you want to get into photography, buy nice, high dollar, used equipment in either Canon or Nikon.

If you want to just take garden variety pictures, go with a new Sony mirrorless
I liked the A7 until you said this. dont want "garden variety photos"

Sony a7iii is full frame. The Sony a7series is anything but garden variety. And you should be shooting RAW if at all possible to get full advantage of processing etc.

Well it's shite advice so I wouldn't worry about it
Someone really should tell the Sony shooters like Chris Burkard that they're not real photographers anymore now that they've left Canon/Nikon for Sony. I've never, ever, heard anyone claim Sony is lifeless compared to Nikon or Canon. All three are "boring" compared to Fuji (or Leica, of course), but all three are absolutely pro photographer tools. The reality us you can make great, lively photos with any system, but particularly with all of the big 4 discussed in this thread.
The A7 series is a great line.

My wife (no pics)has done photography pretty much her whole life and she uses Nikon.

That's my bad - the A7 is a full frame MILC, just with a dizzying array of specs depending on what you want.
I haven't even really shopped the A5000 or A6000 lines, but my mental model had me thinking the A7 was APS-C and the A9 was full frame (not the case).

It's been a remarkable 3 or 4 years for Sony's digital camera division, particularly in light of Canon's slow start (and somewhat of a fumble) with their MILCs.

I have a Nikon D750, but if I ever get enough money to swap to a mirrorless, I’ll want something like the Sony a7r lll

Besides, I’d work on always improving composition skills.

I have a Nikon D500. And when/should I wear it out, I'll look at MILC at that time and see what is good then. Of course I'm assuming I'll have the needed cash.

Fuji all day, XT-3 or XT-4. If you are a hipster and don't want to change lenses, X-100f or X-100V. If you are down-market, XT-30.
If you will be shooting a lot of HD video, get the best Sony you can afford.

Had been previously using iPhone 11, but want to join the big leagues.

I like Canon mid/higher end dslr’s but also have Sony and a Fuji p&s. It’ll be easier to find used quality glass/accessories if you go Nikon or Canon - but you can’t go wrong with whatever you decide on. Sony used to get dinged for not having a ton of non-sony accessories that didn’t work as well as Sony brand stuff, but Sony makes very good cameras.
One thing to add is that Nikon is letting people do the online learning classes free this month. That might give you some insight to their stuff .....

Nikon has a ton of built-in features.
Canon is more user friendly.
If you don't have a lot of money for lenses or post-production software, probably Nikon is best for you. Canon is the better camera, though.
Think of it like buying a car for joyriding. If you like to tinker under the hood, go with Nikon. If you just want to get in the car and drive, buy a Canon.

Apologies to you, but this is the most ridiculous post in a thread full of them

Used Canon full frame and that nifty 50 (50mm 1.4) And you’ll be set for learning. If you’re just going to set it to auto, than save your money and keep using your phone.

Big issue with full frame is cost and range of available lenses.
Ive resisted the urge for full frame for that reason.

It is. And the old standard A7 is a hell of a sub $1k camera. But then you gotta buy the lenses.
