Is there any physical test I could do to rule out an ACL tear without an MRI?

Been having lots of tendonitis for the past few years, and any time I make a quick lateral movement playing basketball or soccer, I get sidelined for a few days because it hurts.

I remember hurting it about three or four years back, but it didn't really fit the classic cases I've seen and read about. I think I remember a pop, but it wasn't excruciating and I could still walk and put light pressure on it, so I didn't get it checked out.

If your ACL was torn, you wouldn't just be "side-lined" for a couple of days. Probably a torn meniscus.

Sounds like a meniscus injury. I'm recovering from my second knee surgery now.

What he means is he wouldn't be able to cut at all or play anything. Knee would give out.

When I tore mine I was a bit sore and could walk around fine...but when I tried to get back in the game I knew it was fricked up.

frick... yeah I was thinking that could be meniscus related. it just doesn't seem to heal and get stronger.

I tore my ACL a few years back. Very similar situation.

Blew it out and sat out a few days. Pain faded and I could sprint a straight line no problem. Tried to play competitively again and the first time I cut it gave out again.

Went to the doc and he did that test where they bend your knee and pull on the upper calf right under your knee (I assume that's what the poster above linked to). Determined it was definitely not torn and told me just to take it easy.

Couple weeks pass and I felt great. Tried to be athletic again and it gave out immediately. Went back in and doc told me the same thing but I requested an MRI. Turns out the ACL was obliterated along with a torn meniscus.

Certainly sounds to me like you tore it; but, the doc said the meniscus is likely what was causing the knee to give out like it was, so maybe you just got that. It's much more minor comparitively.

I tore my ACL. I severed it actually. I had no clue what happened. I know it hurt like hell. It swole up for a few days but the next week I could walk on it. So if you don't know what it's like to tear it, you may not know what the hell is going on. I will say that when I woke up after the repair, that was the worst pain I have ever experienced.

yeah, guess i should suck it up and go.

pain is in front of my knee where the acl is. i was diagnosed with patellar tendonitis and did treatment on it about two years ago, and it cleared up. but it seems that every time i do even the slightest side to side movement it flares up.

I tore my meniscus and acl before. Meniscus I played sports on all year. It hurt but it was bearable. Acl I couldn't walk. You'd know. Trust me.

If you get sidelined from pain it could be a buildup of scar tissue. Docs told me a partial tear would heal up just fine but it's pretty much entirely scar tissue holding it together. The scar tissue pops every once in a while and hurts like no other but I'd take that over another surgery any day.

There are several that your primary care physician could do to you to determine whether imaging is necessary.

Tore mine about 20 months ago.

At the time, it took 6 weeks to diagnose. Couple of X-Rays and finally an MRI.

No pop. Very little pain and swelling. And I could walk perfectly fine. In fact, I went and hiked a couple of peaks at the time. Had no idea, thought it was just a sore knee.
