Mental illness is a huge problem, but most issues which are usually personality disorders get misdiagnosed as mental illness. So you then form a culture looking for an excuse.
Sorry dumbass..

You can be an addict and not have a mental illness and you can have a mental illness and not be an addict. You're making a blanket statement that is inherently false.
I never made any sort of claim this way. In fact, my first response to this thread did not mention addiction.

Of course they have to be open to treatment. The problem is what do you do when the person doesn't even know something isn't quite right?
Ok, so now we are getting somewhere. This question is in-line with my general point that yes, mental illness is a problem in this country, but there is no simple fix. It is typically a product of the subjects personal mental state and experiences, and that there is not some blanket diagnosis or treatment that you can give wholesale that will make this problem go away.

I'm not really arguing anything. I'm just saying the blanket statement of addiction and mental health go hand in hand is asinine
After your first response, I said they often go hand in hand. The word often is their as a qualifier to show it is not a blanket statement. Often meaning, in many instances. I don't think there is much to debate there.

I have a very non-insane personal life. I'm not remotely close to being crazy. I am a free thinker.

" In an insane world a sane man appears insane."
I find people in a State that cant manage a budget and doesn't have a Top Golf arguing sanity vs insanity to be quite insane.

I think his issue was the statement that they usually go hand in hand ( I know you didn't make it ).
And like your numbers show, less than 1/3 of the mentally ill have a history of substance abuse.

I didn't realize how big of an issue it was until I started working in the ER. It's a huge issue.

on purpose (though by accident would be bad enough)?
Honestly, I'm almost certain I'd punch or kick the shite out of someone that intentionally pissed or spit on me and I'm very even tempered.

Perhaps that is the nature of the misunderstanding. From my perspective though, the population I am more concerned with are the substance abusers, and their history with mental disorders, rather than the population of mental disorders, and their history with substance abuse. That is covered in the second bullet of what you quoted, and shows to be a bit higher. That population would support an underlying issue beyond the substance abuse, while the other would just be a characteristic of those with mental issues. So in my opinion, substance abuse can often be a symptom of a mental disorder. That opinion doesnt really mean much, and is not particularly helpful, I am just trying to clarify that I don't believe they go hand in hand in the sense that they are the same exact thing.

Man, just stop posting in this thread until you understand that a personality disorder IS a mental illness.

1. Mental illness is real and very difficult to deal with as a patient and difficult to treat as a clinician.
2. Mental health is also "BIG BUSINESS" for Pharma, Drug Stores, Shippers, Advertisers, Insurers, and Doctors.
3. No one likes to admit that their problem is under their own control and that they can do something about it. Why? Because if it is not my fault, it is not my responsibility to get better. It is the treatment team and society's responsibility.
4. Because of #2 and #3, it is in everyones best interests to "create" as many mental illness diagnoses as possible and to convince as many people as possible that they have one.
