If you disagree with the conservatives on the political board or if you believe in something that is not generally accepted by others (chemtrails, alien assistance on pyramids), you are branded as "mentally ill."

I think you're grossly confusing being an addict with having a legitimate mental illness.

They usually go hand in hand.

It just got reclassified as a neurodevelopmental disorder a few years ago.

He's a self-claimed drug addict, go easy on him. Probably didn't have a full deck to play with in the beginning and now he's to the point of proclaiming a flush with 2 spades and 3 clubs.

Like the guy said, "It is hard to believe 30% of American women are taking some type of pill for mental instability..............................that means 70% are going around untreated!!!!

Most addicts have some type of mental disorder, or get classified with one. Warranted or not they are usually treated as having one. I don't believe it to be good practice but we are speaking to current state of how mental illness is handled.

Look, I'm sure you have some sort of knowledge one way or the other but I diagnose and treat mental illness on a daily basis. Making a broad claim like "Most addicts have some type of mental disorder" is asinine at best.

I am as sane as anyone you meet (unless you are a nurse in a mental institution).

I am not remotely crazy. Chemtrails are a fact. Weather geoengineering is a fact. Alien assistance with pyramid construction is 90% a fact (10% the theory is wrong).

The gullible are those who don't acknowledge this.

Well yes, but I'm trying to say for the most part the addicts get diagnosed with mental illnesses when it is a personality disorder. The hand in hand comment was a response to a "mental disorder definition being too lax".

Maybe this argument is an issue of semantics, but just doing a quick Google search shows:

quote:

According to reports published in the Journal of the American Medical Association:

Roughly 50 percent of individuals with severe mental disorders are affected by substance abuse.

37 percent of alcohol abusers and 53 percent of drug abusers also have at least one serious mental illness.

Of all people diagnosed as mentally ill, 29 percent abuse either alcohol or drugs.

LINK

I mean I know you are saying you are in the biz, but my experience and nearly all research I have done up until today suggests that there is at least some sort of correlation between mental health and substance abuse.

I'm not relying on that link to back up my point, which was that mental health issues are personal in nature, and would be difficult to treat on a large scale. Most of this has to do with the idea that the subject themselves will have to be open to treatment for the treatment to be effective. Seeing as how you are a mental health professional, are you seriously arguing this?

I'm actually not even clear what you are trying to argue right now.

You can be an addict and not have a mental illness and you can have a mental illness and not be an addict. You're making a blanket statement that is inherently false.

Of course they have to be open to treatment. The problem is what do you do when the person doesn't even know something isn't quite right?

I'm not really arguing anything. I'm just saying the blanket statement of addiction and mental health go hand in hand is asinine.

I would venture to guess that claiming that aliens dropped down to earth to help out with the pyramids and then peacing out, probably gets you labeled as mentally ill a little more quickly than your views on fiscal policy. However, I would also venture to guess that if at any point your mind has been occupied with the thought of ancient alien labor practices , you probably are not qualified to weigh in on Fiscal policy, or anything else that adults typically talk about.

No one was speaking in absolutes. You are assuming that was what anyone meant but no one stated.

Don't blame it on mental health like most people want to do, but got clean by just becoming a man. Most mental illness in this country is an excuse for not taking responsibility for your actions.
And this is why we have a problem, with dumbass thought process like this. Would you tell someone with Cancer to "just be a man and get over it?" Mental illness is real for some people, just like Cancer is

True. But, I have no debt and my personal finances are in good order and that doesn't sound like "truly insane." Many geniuses have been declared insane (I'm not suggesting I'm a genius, just making a point).
