As I’ve grown older and begin to face my own mortality, I realize it would be prudent to have a last will and testament. What is a reasonable cost to have this done? It won’t be anything fancy. Everything will be left to the wife (no pics). If we kick the bucket at the same time, everything divided between the kids equally with my sister (no pics) as executor/trustee until the kids reach 21 or a bit older. That’s about it.

Serous answer, my dad charges,$150-200 if it's a standard will without anything complicated. This is a small town so it will likely be a bit more elsewhere.

Save your money and do one of the many online wills. With just a little investigating you'll find that many will stand up in the wacked out Louisiana laws designed to steal you children's or loved ones inheritance, but make sure you hand sign and date it and in the opening sentences make sure it states you sign this will being of sound mind and this will renders any previous wills nul and void.

Really a lot of sites have it set up where you just fill in the blanks and it fills in all the state required jargon.

If it's simple, you probably don't actually need one in La. Especially if you just have the wife and no kids. If you're worried about it, you can write one in your own handwriting (the whole thing in your hand-writing), sign and date it (make sure to do day, month, and year), and it will be valid here without need for notarization or anything else.

Yeah I don't think I've ever gotten a good answer for why a will has to cost $350+. It's essentially filling in a template unless you have some complicated estate that will be divided into many parts.

Maybe if you just leave "all my possessions to X." Anything more complex than that is asking for trouble. There are all kinds of nuances that can trip a layman up, and you dont know what you dont know until its too late.

I deal with legal documents every single day, and I'm familiar enough with them that I could draw one up myself and it would probably be okay. But on the chance I've missed something, I go through a lawyer. I've seen people try to save a few hundred, then spend thousands or tens of thousands getting it unsnarled.

There is some awful advice in here. Speaking from experience, Louisiana has some pretty specific form requirements and an online will is very risky. It would be a smart move to go see a lawyer for what you are needing.

Are you advising whether witness signatures are required? How many witnesses? Do they need to sign on every page? Is there any certain attestation language required for the witnesses? What if a person is blind or deaf? How do you handle the witnesses? Are there any bequests that cannot be passed by a will? Will putting something in a will that is contrary to a beneficiary designation somewhere cause any problems down the road?
