Your parents emigrated from Germany in 1880? Just how old are you?
But I can corroborate. I've had some good times at Germanfest in Robert's Cove.

My ancestors on my father's side came from Acadie via Maryland in 1750s. They settled on the Acadian coast of the Mississippi River. After which, they moved to St. Gabriel area to help support the Spanish fort at mouth of Bayou Manchac.
The Spanish governor(De Galvez, I think) needed help with protecting the territory from the British.

Ulloa was the governor at the time of the St. Gabriel grants.
My grandfather arrived at St. Gabriel in 1768.

Google The Galvez Expedition.
My 5x grandfather was a member of the Galvez Expedition, as were many other French citizens of the Acadian Coast.
He came to Louisiana in 1765 after being held prisoner by the British.
I have done a lot of reading and research on my last name, which is a well known Cajun name. From my 5x grandfather in St. James, his sons moved west to the Attackapas region and their descendents moved further west into what is now Cameron and Calcasieu Parishes. It's interesting to see how, in 200 years, the family spread out across the whole southern part of the state from Orleans to Calcasieu.

Its not like the Spanish weren't bringing in their own as well. My ancestors came from the Canary Islands in 1778. The Spanish were recruiting fighting aged men with families to populate the area. I imagine they had no issues with their allies helping them

One of the best sources I've read...

In 1785, Spain paid for 7 ships to transport Acadians to settle in Louisiana. For Spain, it meant settlers to buffer the zone between Spanish land and the British land. For the Acadians, it meant a chance to join their fellow Acadians and to regain some of what they lost during the Exile.

The French were never fighters they were partiers.
Books were written about the Old Settlers on Dauphin Island that the island was taking over numerous times by the British , the Pirates and, the Spaniards because the French settlers stayed drunk and party all the time

The French and Spanish monarchs were also cousins, part of the Bourbon family.
But yes, allies against the British.
And Catholicism.
Other than Islenos from the Canary Islands and a handful of Spanish from Galvez's hometown, the Spanish administrations didnt settle many colonists themselves.

If I am not mistaken...
The French King and Spanish King were cousins (Bourbons) at the time and Catholics; ergo a French-Spanish commradery. Also, the French were in a major war (7 Years War/French and Indian War) with the English, amongst other nations, who were taking on the world.
Speculation: I believe Louisiana was given to the Spanish as a means not to loose it, and the tactical advantage of controlling the Miss River, to the English during that time period. Plus there were already some french settled in the region. There was really no other place for them to go considering the English occupation elsewhere on the continent and the major war occurring in Europe.
EDT: Damn you Tigahbruh, beat me to it!
