Curious about the deportation of the Acadians to Louisiana. The area was under Spanish rule at the time, but obviously they were welcome.

What was morale like for the Spanish, having to welcome newcomers to the area? I take it France and Spain were somewhat allies at the time against the British?

Just seems odd to me that Spain would've been cool with transporting thousands of non-native people to their own territory without something to gain from it...

The Acadians came from Canada. Acadie is now Nova Scotia.

The Spanish welcomed a group of fellow Catholics that would settle in their sparsely populated Louisianan territory and fight against any British incursion. They both had enmity for the British.

This.

Big period of Catholic vs. Anglican/British tension. Catholic nations were oftentimes friendly especially when it came to opposing the Anglican British.

Some Acadians came from France. They were already cast out of British owned Nova Scotia.

A great book to read is A Great & Noble Scheme

It details alot of what transpired in Acadie/Nova Scotia. All before the the Acadians came to Spanish help Louisiana.

Colonial powers generally tried to encourage settlement in their colonies. Population conferred legitimacy. Little known fact: Under Mexican rule, Texas was too thinly populated to support itself economically and deter Indian attacks. Mexico initially welcomed Anglo immigrants for this reason.

And the Spanish had very minimal interest in settling in Louisiana themselves.

Another little known fact. Louisiana had one of the first Asian populations in North America. The trade route between Spain and the Phillipines went from Manila to the west coast of Mexico, then overland to the Gulf, and on across the Atlantic. Some travelers on this route made their way to Louisiana, and some families in S. Louisiana who consider themselves Cajun are actually of Filipino descent.

My folks went to Rayne as farmers, but they came from Germany in the 1880's. There are lots of "German" Cajuns in that area.

This is an educated guess, but there was a huge effort to import people to the colony to develop the land, and in turn, the economy. This was the only way for the colony to become a fruitful and sustainable endeavor for ruling country. The German Coast, for example, was the result of a massive charter granted to John Law by the French crown to resettle French immigrants into Louisiana. When the French settlers proved to be too dainty for the harsh conditions, Law turned to Germans who thrived here.

I imagine, the motivation for resettling the Acadians was similar.

There was a guerilla movement, but the British employed rather brutal tactics when their families were identified.

Le Grande Derangement wasn't exactly peaceful.

They did fight back. They fought for 20 years. Take some time to learn about Joesph Beausoleil Broussard and other Acadian resistance fighters. They were no pussies
