So in the kitchen with the SO, and I ask her to measure me out 12 oz of egg whites in a measuring cup. She then puts it on a food scale and weighs it to 12oz. I asked her what she is doing. She said making sure its 12oz in case the cup is wrong. I said thats not how it works, specific gravity etc. Anyway, basically she thinks that if you put 12oz of any liquid in a measuring cup, that it will weigh the same (on a food scale) as 12oz of any other liquid

Did you lecture her on the difference between mass and volume?

Weight != volume

Though in fairness, the fact that we use ounces for both wasn’t exactly well thought out.

Well... one is a volume and one is a weight.

Depends on if you're referring to weight or volume

To be honest I'm having a tough time telling who is the stupid one here

Sounds like it's you though. I would think of ounces in terms of weight.

Ounces aren't part of the metric system

Right. If he wanted 12 fluid ounces he should have said that

If he just said 12 ounces I would assume he is talking about weight and not volume
