I just took a position with an out of state company and they want me to have a cell phone with their local area code. I am one of only two remote employees at this company. So they just shipped me an Iphone without discussing it with me. I am a bit hesitant to rock the boat and bitch about the phone during my first week on the job.

How do y'all handle this? Carry two phones all the time? Carry the work phone only during business hours? Forward the phone and emails to your personal phone or vice versa?

I really don't want to give up my local phone as I have had it forever. How is this handled in the modern business world?

Update - The OT is spicy as frick today and, apparently, carrying two phones is de rigeur practice. My bad. God damn.

I carry two. Always have with a couple different companies. So I can hand off one of them to someone else if I need to.

You should start wearing a holster with a phone on each side.

Ask them if you can set up a local number to forward to your phone. I think virtual numbers are pretty cheap.

Maybe get a small stipend for your monthly phone bill and sell it to them as a cost savings?

I’m not an executive, but when I went to work for a Houston area oil company several years ago, they gave me a cell phone for work due to the nature of my job. I like it. Keep separate phone numbers. That way, people at work and 3rd parties I deal with for work related matters don’t have my personal cell number.

During the week, I’ll carry both on me in pockets. On the weekends, my work cell is with me in the vehicle, but I don’t necessarily carry it on me all the time. I’ll just check it periodically in case someone called for an emergency type situation.

Why not get a virtual number so you only have to carry one phone?

We have office phones that have virtual numbers and they have a mobile app that allows us to make and receive calls using our work number instead of personal cell number. Then just log out of the app after hours or whenever you want work calls going to voicemail

I used to forward my work cell to my personal one when I had two. This was back in the Nextel and Blackberry days though.

I carry two phones at all times when I’m on call.

Both are a iPhone +. It sucks.

There are a few apps like Sideline that let you run a second number on your existing phone maybe that is an option. But I agree that dual phone holsters are quick way to lure in depraved hotties, more so than Crocs.

This.

Plenty of services out there for this, and it would save them money from having to pay for a separate line and data plan.

Do not do something without their knowledge.

It depends on the line of work you are in, and the type of data that is stored or that you are accessing on the work device. Maybe read through your company's acceptable use policy for tech/mobile devices and see what that says. If they allow BYOD, then talk with your supervisor about going that route and have a work number that is forwarded to your personal device.

Download your Brazzers account to the work phone. The company will then take your work phone away from you. Problem solved.
