I'm looking at getting a bicycle. I want something I can put some road tires on and knock out 20 miles, and also cruise downtown NOLA while boozing. I'm not looking to spend over $800, and am not against purchasing second-hand.

Any suggestions?

You'll probably get the most value looking on craigslist. You looking for a road, hybrid or mountain bike?

SE draft. Single speed. I put mine through hell. Cheap enough you can put money into a good saddle and tires.

Trek 8.1, 8.2, or 8.3.

All good bikes with slight upgrades as the price increases.

Eta: buy off of eBay. You'll find incredible deals on eBay. I have a bike listed on there now that's getting action.

Craigslist. Most on there are almost brand new and are cheap. Don't buy a new one.

I would look at a beach cruiser by Phat Cycles. My wife and I did a tour of New Orleans on our cruisers and it was about 16 miles. Very comfortable and stable.

Find a used Bad Boy Ultra or not, your choice. I can motor on mine.

Try to find something similar to this on the used market. Quick, can put down some miles, and burly enough to beat on around town.

Surly Crosscheck
28mm tires
48-17 single speed
shallow drop bars

The complete can be found here but it is 200 bucks over your budget. Hit craigslist, etc.

You get what you pay for. A walmart bike is good for about 1000 miles. If you ride 20 miles a day, that is about 2 months.

The OP should look at cyclocross or touring bikes. They are good for our roads.

I have a motobecane fantom cross from bikesdirect.com with about 9000 miles in 3 years on it. I paid about $500 for it and have only changed the saddle to a Brooks B17 and tires about every 2000 miles. I have used the bike for long distance touring, day touring, cruising, and exercise.

I've been looking at Motobecane and bikesdirect.com and I like what I see.

With road tires, can I get some good speed with a hybrid? I want to be able to keep up, but also don't want to crack a rim in the NOLA streets.

I use 32 mm tires which are good for roads with bad cracks and light gravel. I exercise ride at 17-20mph.
