I cleaning a wall (paper finish, but you can wipe it down) in my foyer and I noticed a raised area on the wall. You can't see it, but you can feel it. Not coincidentally, there is a wall switch on the other side.

I had a contractor come over to give me an estimate to redo it, but he wouldn't do it. He said it was unnecessary work and that the wall had probably been like that since new (it wasn't). My house was built in the 50's but the foyer has been remodeled/updated several times. Something clearly is wrong inside the wall.

Why would a contractor turn down work? I want a flawed wall replaced.

Often, after meeting with a potential customer, the contractor turns down the work because they don't want to deal with that person. Typically batshit crazy women.

a lot of work to repair something that cannot be seen. It's probably just bad drywall work from previous remodel.

Probably wasn't worth his time doing such a small job. Sounds like you need to call a handyman type person.

If you really really wanted it done, and he quoted you $3,000, would you let him do the work?

Could be some sort of CIA listening device

You should sledgehammer the drywall there and check it out

Maybe someone just stepped through the wall.

I'll probably just "remodel" the foyer and then I can find out what exactly was going on there.

I'm sorry to pile on, but Deeprig9 gave you the correct answer.

This is highly unlikely. You just need to know the philosophy behind finishing drywall to understand this. There are many raised spots on a wall. The art of finishing drywall is to use mud to feather these raised spots out so the walls APPEAR smooth and flat. It's an illusion.

I would recommend keeping that contractors information and consider using him for future work, because he is likely an honest person who strives for customer satisfaction. On top if it being a total waste of your money, he probably knew he would probably not be able to do that job to your satisfaction, so he declined the work.

Mind control device planted in the wall. Battery finally gave out and swolt up. Don't worry, there are more planted in other walls.

This sounds like a great DIY type project. Just watch some youtube videos and try it yourself. Make sure you include plenty of photos of the work.

I’ll never understand this argument. The contractor just needs to price the quote for said work accordingly so it is worth his time and he will in fact make a profit.

Because it’s piddly and a waste of time. You know opportunity costs.
