re: OT Car Baws: Xterra, CRV, 4Runner, or Tahoe?

I have a 99 CRV. It has never refused or not been able to go where I drove it, with the exception of two feet of fresh show with no chains. I said "frick it, let's see.". Made it a while, but backed out just fine. Never been stuck, and has made it over some hairy stuff. Even went 3500 miles with a blown head, no loss of power or gas mileage.
I don't know about the newer models tho.

I’m a Honda guy but I’ve never been a fan of the CRV and as another poster mentioned the newer ones have a serious issue in which oil gets diluted by unburned fuel.
The 4Runner is going to be your best bet but it’s hard as hell to find a used one for a good price. They are overvalued on the used market.
The Xterra is a POS.
Go with the Tahoe if you can’t find a deal on the 4Runner.

A coworker of mine bought a 1998 4-Runner from a coworker for $200. He got 4 new tires, new windshield, got it detailed, installed new brake lights, had all the fluids changed and had something fixed on the AC (it didnt work) all in he had to put $3300 into it. When the other coworker found out how much he spent he gave him his $200 back.

The only thing I don't like about my Tahoe is the middle bench.
That's something I actually like on my Tahoe. After going on fairly long trips in it, I can't say I'd want to use anything else.
Before I had an Enclave and an Acadia (same vehicle) and I still like the Tahoe.

Xterra trans issue only on older models and even then there is a simple modification to resolve it. check xterra forums
Xterra is not good on gas as it is built on truck frame and geared for off road but it is a beast, fun to drive, and you can't kill the engine.
After 2006 they put in a bigger engine and it has plenty of power

XTerra-no power, CRV-even less power, 4Runner-bulletproof, Tahoe-well, it’s a GM. At least it will be cheap to fix.

This is how I would rank them:
1. Tahoe - big, reliable, and comfortable. It can tow anything you probably own and is good off road with the Z71 package. It’s better than the others on longer highway trips and has a very good infotainment system. Gas mileage sucks.
2. 4Runner - known for reliability (It’s probably the most proven design that Toyota has), and off road capability. It has the worst infotainment/technology of the group and the gas mileage sucks.
3. XTerra - Nissan’s competitor to the 4Runner. It’s smaller, cheaper, and has an old school engine that’s pretty much bulletproof. It doesn’t ride well but it can tow and go off road as needed. Gas mileage sucks.
4. CR-V - Most popular crossover in the US. It’s a good value and easier to live with than the others if you don’t need to take it off road or tow any sizable trailer. Good gas mileage and good reliability.
You can’t really go wrong with any of them. None are bad choices. Depends on what your priorities are.

4Runner. Stay away from the xterra. If you have to have the extra room then look at a sequoia or expedition. Tahoe is small inside.

4Runner will last forever...
CRV will last close to forever and will cost significantly less than the 4Runner...but is an AWD vehicle not really meant for offroad.
Xterra will be a great parts donor car.
Tahoe...great station wagon that has good towing capacity.

Yep. I lucked up on one last year after looking for a good deal for a couple of years. 2006 V8 Limited with only 90,000 miles, and Carfax came back clean with every recommended service completed. Lady only wanted $5500 for it, and I couldn't get to the bank fast enough to get a cashier's check. Only drawback is it's not 4WD. Those are even harder to find.

Yeah... Okay.
My 4runners nickel and dime me to death.
Sensors, cats, rusted off fuel filter.
This xterra has had new belts put on.
My last one had a timing belt and water pump done with belts every 105k miles.
If you want to belittle them, point out a 13 xterra pro4x makes an 01 4runner look like a Cadillac featurewise.
I bought it for it's offroad prowess, not for luxury

I'm guessing that yours wasn't an early gen2. Those were horrid pieces of crap.
I've had 2 4runners with excess of 200k on each. Timing belt and water pumps every ~100k. My 4runners were bulletproof. Now I have an old LX470 that I will drive until the Apocalypse.

What are the years and prices of each?
You cannot compared a Tahoe to a CRV because the price difference could be substantial. Is MPG a factor? Are you towing anything?
Between those four I would go with the 4runner even though I hate the interior and its underpowered, but it will last and have a better resale value in the end. People just can't get enough of them.

The factory radiators were in the automatics.
That's all been fixed for 9 years
ETA: mine is newer, no issues to fix.
