Specifically a truck. What is the process like? Are you still able to haggle pretty well on the price?

Prepare thy anus.

Go to Houston or Atlanta and you might survive the process.

I understand there is a wait involved, but if I have a good dealership to work with is it really that bad?

Factory isn't a dealership, you know that, right?

In my experience, you are subject to the "rebates" at the time it delivers and not the time you order it. So let's say they are giving $5k off today and when your truck delivers they are only giving $3k off then you missed out on that $2k. Oh, and most car sales guys hate a guy wasting their time to order a vehicle instead of just buying one today.

Dealerships do the ordering, you know that right?

Not a good financial decision. I’m not going to tell a baw how to use his money.

It’s easy. Some manufacturers will even install the Nutz right on the assembly line.

It's my understanding that a price is agreed upon prior to ordering. Is that not correct?

You can't find what you want in the lot? I shop trucks often online and there are tons of differently equipped trucks.

May depend on your dealer. I had an agreed upon price when ordered but the factory incentives were not guaranteed to be the same on delivery.

I'm early in the looking process, but I have not yet found what I'm looking for. Honestly, I don't mind the extra hassle to get exactly what I want. I don't like the idea of settling or paying more for things I don't want just because it's readily available.

You are right. You have a verbal agreement on price prior to ordering the vehicle to your spec. Then it arrives and you pay what you agreed upon or less, never more. If they screw something up like they did with my truck and put brown leather in when I didn’t ask for it, then you negotiate the price down further or have them change it or walk without paying a dime. If in the time your order is being assembled and delivered the vehicle with your specs shoes up somewhere else, you see what price you can get it from them and use it to your advantage with your vehicle (or just buy from the new dealer).

I would order a year or two older model if I could. The year I was shopping was the first year CarPlay was being equipped with the infotainment systems and the 2015s were not going to be able to get it through a software update or anything so I went with a 2016. I’m gonna drive the thing till the wheels fall off so I didn’t mind taking the initial depreciation hit but if you can get someone else to take it...

when you "order" there is no haggle. you pay sticker price but the only advantage is you can get it exactly as you order it.

since most base model cars/trucks come nearly fully loaded, and then there is the one other versions which are custom rims and heated leather seats extra packages, i dont see the need or advantage to order one.

Wrong.

You can actually get some good deals doing a factory order from a dealer. The key is to use volume dealers, these are the ones that want to sell as many cars as possible to get factory kick backs.

I got my current ride for 5% under invoice (not MSRP) doing a factory order.

You will decide a price with dealer, possibly pay a deposit and wait.

The fun thing is you can track your car being built with certain manufactures.

Nope. The process is basically the same as buying a car off the lot except you have to wait for delivery. As someone said before, the factory incentives can change from the time the order is placed and when the deal is completed.

I order fleet trucks and we just get a big rebate for buying x amount of trucks by this specification a year. If you want accessories they send it to an upfitter and then back to the factory to be sent to a dealer for a courtesy delivery.

The only vehicle I've seen ordered from the factory was my mom's 1997 Grand Caravan ES. She wanted a loaded model with the 3.8 V6, trailer towing package, Candy Apple Red exterior, no leather, and had it built without the factory roof rack that was actually part of whatever package she got.

It was delivered with 7 miles on the odometer and if I remember correctly she paid $500 over invoice for it. Here it is in 2010 cleaned up and ready to sell.

You can negotiation the price and have it ordered, no different than buying one on the lot. You just have to wait for it is the difference.

Someone should tell the last three dealerships I ordered my vehicles from that the OT said they're doing it wrong.
Goddamn, there's some stupid people here. About half of you should thank god every day that the Rant exists so you're not the dumbest motherfrickers on this site.

It doesn't fricking matter, OP, unless maybe you're trying to order something that is an allocated item from the factory that is intentionally limited in number, but you're looking at things like higher end sports or luxury cars when you start talking about factory allocation. If it's the kind of car or truck you see six of on any dealer's lot, you should be able to negotiate. The thing to remember is that whether you request the dealership to order a car to your specifications or if they happen to order the exact same car on their own to put on their lot, it doesn't make a lick of difference to the factory. The dealership pays the EXACT same amount from the factory based on model, trim, and options.

You'll still negotiate on the price the same way you would if the car is sitting on their lot, and if the dealership won't meet your price, then they just won't place the factory order. What's the dealership going to do, tell you that they won't order your car unless you pay MSRP? frick no. They're going to try to negotiate a price that everyone likes so they can sell you a car.

The dealership is almost certainly going to require you to put down a good faith deposit after you agree on a price, but before they actually order the car, so be aware you're going to have to cough money up at the front. They do this so they can cover their end if you don't take delivery and they're stuck with a car (likely heavily optioned and more expensive than others they might have) on their lot they weren't planning to have on their lot, but the deposit should be applied against the sale price when you sign the papers once the car arrives.

It used to take months to get the car in. The first one I ever had built was ordered in April and didn't arrive until mid-October. Now the process is so streamlined, you're looking at weeks for it to arrive. My last one was four weeks from negotiation on price to me taking delivery.
