Opioid maker Purdue Pharma files for bankruptcy as part of settlement
Purdue Pharma, the company that made billions selling the prescription painkiller OxyContin, filed for bankruptcy in White Plains, New York, days after reaching a tentative settlement with many of the state and local governments suing it over the toll of opioids.
But legal battles still lie ahead for Stamford, Connecticut-based Purdue, which is spending millions on legal costs as it defends itself in lawsuits from 2,600 government and other entities. About half the states have not signed onto the proposal. And several of them plan to object to the settlement in bankruptcy court and to continue litigation in other courts against members of the Sackler family, which owns the company. The family agreed to pay at least $3 billion in the settlement plus contribute the company itself, which is to be reformed with its future profits going to the company’s creditors.

I swear. ZERO accountability for anything these days. If some POS moron uses a gun...it's the gun's fault. If someone gets hooked on drugs...it's an opioid crisis.

Purdue made mega-mega money from the sale of OxyConton.

Wasn’t there proof that the company was using payola to get docs to over prescribe their meds?

They lobbied congress to enact laws that forced health care providers to consider pain management as part of their service and physician ratings (which are tied to reimbursement and compensation).
So even if doctors knew that the patient was seeking drugs, they were pressured to prescribe pain meds and send them on their way.

I'd like to see more companies go on the legal offensive rather than roll over and settle. Simply spinoff all new product lines and when some ambulance chaser comes at them, bankrupt the spin off.
RoundUp? F' it! go bankrupt! Oxy? F' it, go bankrupt!
When the pharma corps especially get tired of the crap they'd be wise to just pull out of the USA market and stop providing meds to the entire nation. See how quickly the legal extortion stops then.

Is the gun prescribed by a medical professional in order to help you with your ailments?

again, this is against a pharmacy. while these lawsuits are sketchy (they are by states, not individuals), the issue is not the addicts fault
doctors over-prescribed very addictive drugs to people and many became horribly addicted following the advice of professionals. those people acted responsibly and just got caught up in a bad system they had no idea was bad. it's not their fault

You need a doctor with ethics.

It’s sad to see these stupid millennials putting so many traditional American businesses into bankruptcy

...and no one knows why prescription medication cost so much.

Pretty hard when your doctor is saying, "here take this incredibly addictive heroin pain killer to ease your mild back pain because I get huge kickbacks from the maker"

This is the result when nobody is accountable for their own actions and always somebody else's fault.
