Crashed or did the pilot steal it? No wreckage, no indication of a crash such as radio transmissions or a mayday.

The Japanese F-35 fighter jet missing in the Pacific could be a major security headache for the U.S. if Russia or China locate the state-of-the-art fighter jet first, experts warn. Japanese defense officials say a search is underway for the fighter jet after it disappeared from radar during a flight exercise in northern Japan. The plane’s pilot is also missing.

quote:

There is no price too high in this world for China and Russia to pay to get Japan's missing F-35, if they can. Big deal,” tweeted Tom Moore, a former senior professional staff member at the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The stealth fighter, which has been beset by cost overruns and delays, has a price tag of around $100 million each.

Why did Japan have one of "our" 100 million dollar stealth fighters?

It would be far more interesting if the pilot's whereabouts were known but the plane was missing.

It's not all ours. It's the winning design of the Joint Strike Fighter program, a multinational group.

ETA - They're all bought through the Pentagon though.

Because some components and structure are manufactured in Japan. They bought in. The price would be more astronomical if certain countries hadnt bought in.

our "customers" don't get the same version as we have, plus, there are, according to a friend who is an engineer on the F-35, umm hmm, certain software stop gap measures to prevent things like this from occurring

Yeah...if a pilot went radio silent and tried to cross into unapproved airspace, measures would be taken to remedy the situation.

what is hilarious to me is we had few Raptors a few years ago, when they were becoming operational, headed for Japan , and as they crossed the IDL it fricked up all of their data bases and they lost all of their computer capabilities, they had to tuck in behind the tanker and follow them back home HTF does that get overlooked??

Considering modern technology, tracking, satellites, all we don't know about....
how in the hell does one lose a $100,000 fighter jet?
