First vehicle I ever owned was a Mazda B2300 standard. I loved that truck.

Bought mine summer of 1996 for $10,000. I was hell on that truck and it was great to me. Got rid of it when I started having kids and have missed it every day since.

Trucks like the 80s and 90s Toyota 4x4s and Nissan Hardbody trucks would sell like crazy now. And would be cost efficient. And would last.
Ohhh but no. Can't have that anymore. Daddy government gotta snuff that out.
How are we going to get you value buses and trains in your 15 minute city quadrant if you can afford to own your own transportation?

That's $20k in today's dollars.
So, adjusted for inflation, it’s roughly half the price, or less, than the average midsize trunk today?

The 1982 Mazda B2000 was powered by a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine that produced approximately 75 to 77 horsepower
Yeah, frick that. Either it could not pull a full load of air or it was geared down so much that top speed was 53mph

In high school/college I had a new 1995 Mazda B4000 4x4 5spd. I loved that truck. Tricked it out with a winch, KC Daylighters (165 watt), CB, scanner, dual antennas, aftermarket radio, Bazooka tube, alarm, 2 inch front lift and 32" BFG MT's. The GOAT addition though was a Knightrider light bar. I had to fend the ladies off with a stick!

1998 Chevy S-10 pickup with a 4.3L V6 and 5 speed manual was a little speed demon for like $16,000.
I has an '86 S-10 with that same engine and transmission. What a great little truck. I think I paid $7500 for it brand new at Polk Chevrolet.

4.3L V6
One of the best engines GM made. It was basically a 5.7 liter with two cylinders cut off.. Same piston size and all…
I had one in my ‘91 S-10 Blazer, it was fast as shite..

I wanted the $99 down, $99/month Nissan
In the mid-‘90s I leased a Nissan truck for $69/month. A few months later they dropped them to $29/month due to surplus.

Had this exact model year. Had 40k miles on it in mid 2000s. So many “do you want to sell your truck” notes left under wipers.

Similar. Bought a new 86 C10 step-side Silverado from Polk for $10,996. Still remember the note was $258.40
ETA - new

I had a 1991 Isuzu with 5spd Manual, No Power Steering and Roll-Up Windows. Great truck.
My first truck was a 1990 with the 5 speed and none of the other features. A matter of fact, I don’t think it came with AC. My dad knew a friend that had the truck but it sat for like 2-3 years. Apparently the engine had issues as it would burn through oil and smoked like crazy. Dad for whatever reason didn’t want to fix it. Even with those issues, that truck was a tank. He painted a few cars on the side. His friend said he would give him the truck if he repainted his hunting truck.

We had a Courier (72-73 ??) (and before that, a Datsun). All the components were Japanese, Mazda I assume.
Smoothest shifting manual trans ever.

Dating yourself with this alone.
For the under 40 crowd, he called it a "standard" because for most trucks (and a lot of smaller cars), an automatic transmission was an "option." Therefore, a manual transmission was the "standard" transmission.
FYI, my first new vehicle (Honda Civic DX Hatchback) had a standard with the "options" of AC and a cassette stereo.

My grandfathers banana yellow 79 Toyota long bed is sitting in the garage at the old home place. I want to fix it up, but the trunk hasn’t moved in about 25 years. Would probably cost 30 grand to get it running.

I’d love to see the cost breakdown of a modern vehicle and see where the costs are. I assume the vast majority is in regulations.

1991 Mazda B2200 SE5
This was the 1st brand new vehicle I ever owned. I just got hired on the FD in 1991 and needed a new ride. My parents co-signed for me since I was just 19 and had no credit, paid $9000 brand new. It was a good truck, had manual transmission, windows and locks, no frills and it was blue instead of white.
