Cover letters seem pretty pointless to me. Having one just wastes the employers time.

You must be a young buck because if you had a family you would have had to take something to pay the bills by now. Good luck stick with it !

If they ask for one, I would provide one.

It's a crapshoot to be honest, but still treat it as if it is top priority.

I don't disagree that communication skills are important, but let's not pretend that there aren't a lot of archaic hiring practices. The whole system reeks of people with too much time on their hands.

Fortunately interviews seem to be going more the route of conversational style rather than HR style, so at least there is progress there. Unless they really do care about my canned answer for how I would handle 30 random situations that I'm not involved in.

You must be shitty at interviewing. If you have an IQ just over retard, along with being black and have an engineering degree; companies usually give you a shot in name of diversity.

Simply not true. Engineering companies don't have to hire blacks from Southern to hire black engineers. LSU and other bigger universities graduate black engineers.

You probably have a point there. HBC's aren't respected in the technical community.

I wouldn't say that not including a cover letter is a deal killer, but it is a damn good tool for you to "talk" to the potential employer before you ever step in front of them....why would you not want to include a cover letter?

Several positions I applied for online didn't ask for a cover letter or references. Most have a place where you can attach documents, and I would always attach both.

Very important, and be sure to staple a photo of yourself on it.

there are the others that say to include them, but that they can only hurt you, not help

They definitely hurt if you don't edit them correctly and mention some other fricking place you're applying or address it wrong.

for my experience its a waste of space because its usually a line of bullshite in which people try to be "creative" by putting something "unique" to stand out, when in reality, its probably just a re-worded version of the same shite everyone else says.

I noticed this ALOT when looking at cover letters from other 2-5 year experience professionals. If everyone essentially says the same thing, it seems like the cover letter is mostly window dressing.

A resume should sell you until you get an interview. The cover letter just does not seem as important to most middle to large companies, hence the thread topic.

True. But how many?

I know black engineers who went to more well known schools, but it is few and far between compared to whites and Indian/Nepali students.

I do not care about the racial dynamics, but at the same time I understand alot of companies just simply want reliable people.

OP, if you are applying online a cover letter is the only way to get consideration. You need to basically copy the job description and apply it to you and your experience. This will get you through the filters.
Good luck and remember, when you are unemployed, there is no job beneath you.

Depends on the company. Smaller companies usually require less information. Larger companies are more strict on their protocol.
